Fuck me do not use oven cleaner on your bike Smokey. If you want to see why, find an old bike part made from cast aluminium and give it a go. Kero, brush, hose, nothing more expensive or complicated than that.

I bought a white pump spray bottle from Bunnings called "30 second degrease" or similar. About 10 dollars. I was impressed with the result when cleaning my bike yesterday at a DIY station with high pressure hoses. Bike was severely covered in bugs and dirt after 5000km on the south island, and left that way in the garage for two weeks. Soaked the whole bike with the degreaser, let it set for a minute. Rinsed thoroughly with high pressure water. Done! I had brought sponges, brushes and what not, looking forward to a good hour of hard manual cleaning. But no, ended up never using any of it. Just sprayed it down and rinsed it off.![]()

A large vat of MEK is good. We used to use that to clean accounting machines and electric motors in the late 60s. Kills cockroaches a treat as well........
