It seems an awful lot to spend when most people will be directed to your site by a (Google) search anyway. How often do you search for something by guessing the URL?

Still I always thought vanity plates were a shocking waste of money but plenty of folks here have those too.

That's what I figured. Does a company now have to buy (theirname).(all domains combinations) to make sure nobody squats on them or "steals" their I.P.?

For the bigger multinational companies, it's a real problem, for our clients (who aren't massive multinationals ), we advise them of the situation, it's a line call, and mostly, we're securing .com and the local (for nz we get .co.nz, if there is an Australian arm then .com.au and so on).

You end up pointing them to one website anyway.

FWIW I'm not Jewish. Old man's side is all COE.
Apparently a lot of Cohens fled to Britain over the ages and hooked up with the local pretend friend.

Part of it for me is sussing how it works for my clients. And being able to point the URLs to all the right places - like Gremlin says.
I've probably got $300 worth of domain names at any one time - mostly for ongoing projects. Some (OK most) don't work out and I let them expire, some are ongoing.
And part of it is the inner geek just likes to have them.

Exactly what we did. Although someone else had our domain name when we expanded into the US. Cost us US$20k to get it... ouch. Claimed advertising revenue to bump the price up. We discounted that, but thinking about it now I should have asked for commission based on my firm driving visitors to his site

There are .us.com's now that do qualify as a TLD which just means more securing (oh and a .au.com... how dumb is that? confusion in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 go!).

Not to get assle on to a rant again, but it's just a blatant money grab by the registers to get as much cash as possible. If they had done this when the internet was taking off it would have worked, but I think they have missed the boat doing it now

Explaining the concept to clients, reviewing currently held domains and securing more.

Only annoyance so far is that conflicted domains can't be dealt with until 30 September when we hold all the conflicts as well
