Ant and I rode a good part of Aff's route today but going the other way round.

The Oakleigh/Paparoa road has some pea-metal on the corners on the Northbound side of the road (mainly on the Whangarei end) and a good sink-hole on the same side if you head to Maungakaramea (and not Oakleigh).
The road from Mangawhai to Waipu via Langs Beach and Waipu Cove is looking good.
With the pea-metal in mind, I would recommend you reverse you route Aff, and go:
Wellsford -Te Hana - Mangawhai Rd - Waipu Cove Rd - SH1 -Oakleigh - Oakleigh/Paparoa Rd - Maungaturoto (SH12) - and back to SH1 at The Swinging Cow Tearooms (at the SH1/SH12 T-intersection). This would lessen the chance of someone crapping out on unseen pea-metal.

By the way, at a easy pace it took Ant and I less than 1hour to go from Maungatapere - Otiaka Vly Rd - Maungakaramea - Oakleigh/Paparoa - SH12 to The Swinging Cow Tearooms (SH1/SH12 T-intersection). So The Whangarei riders should be able to get to Wellsford via this route in well under 1 1/2 hours.

Not really sure mate, I'm thinking Otaika Valley Rd (if the gas station you're thinking about is Shell).

As for the pre-route check we did yesterday it was bloody awesome, got myself in 'the zone' for a while down Paparoa until the damn Ulysses distracted me. Got back into it after we arrived at the Tearooms @ the Brendys.

If Pacidfemme could conform that this is definitely the route they are taking, then the Whangarei lot would only have to leave Maungatapere by 10am (and not 9:30am as I had posted in the above quote).
Forget all the above. Aucka's are going via Old North Rd. We'll need to leave no later than 9:45am from Maugatapere (going via Oakleigh/Paparoa Rd) to meet them at Wellsford by 11am. If you're running late, go via SH1 and meet us at Wellsford (and then join the ride back up with Aff and Co. )
