Hey all! New rider here (jordanfromnz)

    Hey guys, the name's Jordan.

I'm new to this wonderful world of biking but completely obsessed; I'm also currently a student studying at Unitec in Mt Albert, Auckland.. studying a Bachelors degree in Computing Systems. Did my BHST back in November and then recently knocked off the theory test too to get my license sorted.

I took a long time deciding just what bike I was gonna get.. I'm 6'5" and about 100kgs so not exactly small. I sat on a lot of different bikes (I was dead set on a cruiser at first, love the look of them) but quickly found that I was gonna struggle with most of the LAMS approved cruisers. Eventually I sat on a 2013 Hyosung GT250 .. and it's been the only one I feel comfortable on out of all of them Not a cruiser, but it seems like a damn good bike and I find it comfy, so that's good enough for me. Basically to cut a long story short, I'm picking it up on tuesday - and I can't wait! Yes I went brand new.. I like the idea of the warranty + finance haha. I'll be commuting on it mostly. If anyone can share their opinions of this bike as a first bike that'd be cool as.

If anyone has any words of wisdom for a new rider, I'm all ears. I can't wait to further explore this world I've fell in love with

Sorry I know this isn't the most exciting first post, but I will say I've been lurking a lot and there's some awesome information to be found on this site.. I look forward to saying Hi to heaps of the regulars

''If anyone has any words of wisdom for a new rider''

You will hear the term soon enough that ''everyone on the road is out to kill you'' That is far from the truth, you are every bit as responsible for your own safety on the road, as every other road user.
Don't be to eager to join a group ride until you are confidant that yourself and your bike are the best of friends, even then a group ride should only consist of three.
Never be fooled into thinking that you NOT as quick as others.. you will always be quick enough for your own skill level.
Be man enough to get some one on one tuition from a licensed instructor, that will help you immensely.

    hyobags are fucking gay.
    auckland is fucking gay.

whats up with all these six foot something, hundred and something kilo guys lately? is there a new club or something?

words of wisdom? ride like a motherfucker. all the time. dont be a pussy, dont complain about it being wet, or hot, or windy.
Given that you have a hyosung, you're only allowed to wave at hyosungs and other gay bikes, the ones that start with H. harley and honda.

    Congrats and Welcome

The bike that fits you is always the right bike, so well done.

My best advice to you is to go out with someone you know and trust to run over the basics (many many times)so that you increase your life expectancy by as much as you can. Braking, road positioning, and steering skills are pretty damn important to master; especially for when something unexpected happens (every day).

If you can get yourself on a road skills course that would be by far the best option, but practice, practice, practice is the way to go.

If it goes wrong, post your problem up on here. Yes, many will take the piss, but some will give you good advice on how to help you.

My Second Best Advice for a new rider is not to buy a brand new bike, as you will be crying after each drop

Oh......... Back in 1974, I wish someone had told me to NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use the front brake whilst leaning over in a bend. You'll just end up on the opposite side of the road, eating gravel.

If you don't know what 'ATGATT' means, find out quickly and never forget.

    Enjoy and Good luck

a big +1 to what Maha reckons (btw the Pro-rider website are doing some good courses that are subsidised by ACC and Akl Transport).

As Akzle says, ride all weathers (us 'taller Auckland pussies' don't need to worry about snow & ice).

Enjoy our riding and your bike.

But the thing is ... if you ride as though it IS true ... you might be ready and aware .. sooner ...

The comment after "Incidents" is usually "I didn't think that they would do that" (or similar) ... gets trotted out.

To the OP ... after the warranty runs out ... maybe look to trading up to a new larger cc bike in the LAM's class ... No longer are you restricted to 250cc and under ...

You left this bit of the sentence out Trev, ''you are every bit as responsible for your own safety on the road, as every other road user''. which (in the context of what I said) is pretty much what you wrote in your first sentence.

True I did ... but not in the context of not placing/removing any or all blame on/from the rider ...

Just the plain and simple fact ... being not at fault and dead ... is of no advantage to any rider ...

At the time of any "incident" on the road ... it pays not to think who is "In the right" or who is at fault. But ride to survive and argue the point out later ...

I plan on commuting through winter so there'll be no complaints from this guy

Thanks very much for the tips and welcome! Yep all gear all the time, definitely something I'll be doing. I cringe when I see someone riding in shorts and a singlet or something.

Front brake tip I'll make sure I remember too.

Yeah I am aware.. I did look at the GT650.. I thought I'd probably be a bit safer restraining myself to the 250.. I mean it'll sit at the speed limit all day long so don't see too much of a problem. Once I get my full I'll probably end up with a Triumph Bonneville T100 (my dream bike )

Plus the GT250p was also a bit cheaper which factored in as well.

Thank you for the kind welcome everyone! Like I said pics will come as soon as it's in the driveway
