    Lies v Bullshit

I read an interesting article in the Listener about a new book called the Rise of Political Lying.
It discusses how we start to lie, how even animals do it. Koko the gorilla, who was trained to use sign language, ripped a hand basin out of her cell in frustration. When she was asked about it, she signed that that the cat did it.
Then they talk about bullshit. Truthful people and liars have one thing in common, they know the truth and care about it in as much as it governs what they say.
Bullshitters don't care to know the truth, they will say whatever they need to to achieve their ends.
This is best illustrated at election time, although politicians are known to be bullshitters every minute of their lives.
    Speed doesn't kill people.
    Stupidity kills people.

You see similar things in sales pamplets and adverts.

    They have diplomatic immunity
To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods

Like Awatere-Huata when put on the spot about lying to women about her weight loss, she insisted that she didn't lie she just ommitted to tell the WHOLE truth. In other words she "deceived", which may not be lying but is just as reprehensible for a polititian as far as I'm concerned.

It's only a lie if it is proven to be so. So, say what you like, but be careful who is listening.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

And since you know whether it's true or not, if you hear yourself say it you will be able to deem whether or not you are lying, so when you lie you should block your ears to avoid hearing something you know for a fact is not true...

Which is funny as this same technique (omitting to tell the WHOLE story) is cause for cancelling contracts etc when selling by description.

The law recognises it in that situation, but not in others.

It's a tough one sure... but DAH isn't too far above being a theiving little tramp in my personaly opinion.

She's a bright and capable lady - pity she used her talents to her own ends instead of those she was espousing...

An example of a political whopper.
Ronald Reagan was in Germany at a commemoration of the holocaust. He described his feelings on entering one of the death camps when it was liberated.
Unfortunately, he'd never left the US during the war.
