Teen admits kicking puppy to death

    02.09.05 6.00am

A Kaitaia teenager who kicked a six-week-old puppy so hard it died of its injuries could face up to three years in jail.

Halen Joseph Heemi, 17, a road worker, has pleaded guilty in the Manukau District Court to ill-treating a doberman-type puppy.

The court heard that Heemi, who had owned the puppy for less than half an hour, threw it 10m into the air and when it landed on the ground he booted it like a football, killing it.
What is it with these people? And how come they are so young and showing character flaws like this?

Whats the bet he won't actually get jail time... just community service...

Must have some personality disorder. It's not 'normal' for people to do this sort of thing. Probably the same class of people that like vandalism, which I detest.

Thats disgusting... people hurting people... still comes as a little shock these days... but more and more it's becoming normal...

But hurting animals and children... they don't know any better, they can't protect themselves, and people who hurt them should get more than just a few months in jail

We wouldn't be allowed to lock them in a cage with a Pitbull for an hour would we?

One pitbull aint enough.... make it 10 (ten) aggressive pitbulls... and then see has the last laugh and who is standing..... cos it sure wouldnt be the 17 year old. Hope he gets jail time.

You know there is a serious problem happening when these young people are killing defenceless animals all the time.. it tends to lead on to serial killings..
Lets hope they can sort out these ones as they have caught them at the beginning and teach them that what they have done is so wrong. Someone has to get it into their brains.

We haven't actually had a serial killer in NZ yet. There's been some spree killers though.

The only problem with that idea is that then the dogs will be labelled "human attackers" and then put down...

It's like their brains work on an entirely different plane to the rest of us - how anyone could feel anything but disgust at this kind of behaviour is beyond me. I loathe cruelty to any defenceless being, whether it is an animal (and no distinction here - kitten or elephant) or a young child. I am well known for not being a fan of small children, but hearing of the pain and suffering victims like Delecia Whittaker went through in the last days of their far too young to die lives makes me sick.

I remember reading something that the head of the SPCA had written - he said he had no problem with people having strong feelings towards animals - whether the feelings were of love or hate - it was the ones who had no feelings for them at all who were a concern. He said those who don't care whether something lives or dies are the ones who have no qualms about torturing animals.

As for what they get out of it, I really don't think I want to know the answer to that. It is common knowledge that those who treat animals with love and respect are mostly decent people who don't go off the rails. Glad I was brought up to respect animals and so was my husband.

rather than bemoaning the character flaws of the perpetrator in isolation , think on this ---- this bit of sick nastiness was obviously witnessed. Ok - the witness must have reported it afterwards as the pepetrator was caught - hence the story.

But - [and I KNOW the official line is 'don't get involved - don't risk getting hurt yourself'] i personally think that someone who witnesses a thing like that ... ie bullying/cruelty to the defenceless .... without intervening [even if they know they are going to get a hiding] is a gutless, sub-human freak who isn't worthy of the air s/he breaths and shares at least some of the responsibility for the act.

[i'm assuming here that the witness was nearby and not at the top of a tall building accross a busy road with a telescope ... if that was the case i'll back down and apologise for this post]

I still think the courts need to take animal abuse & neglect more seriously. It is good they are starting to do more than give a minor fine for some serious crimes against animals and throwing the #!#!# Scum in jail. Hopefully there are some animal lovers in there that treat them like they deserve.
Those that torture/abuse animals if aren't dealt with early on will never learn to respect living creatures, including people. If they have no qualms about hurting animals how can you expect them to have respect for others, themselves or the property of others.
I have seen the results off someone's idea of a joke that not only causes suffering to the pet they have maimed but causes huge emotional and sometimes financial suffering to the family involved. Sadly this is happening too frequently.

And if you thought the depths to which people could sink could drop no further, this is the latest:

Cat horrifically tortured to death in Nelson
    02 September 2005

A Nelson family's cat was tied to a dog, strangled and dragged to death in what has been described as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty reported in the region.

Tasman District Council's animal control officer Phil Bergman was called late on Wednesday after a large dog was found wandering with the dead cat tied to its lead. The cat had one front leg tied under its chin and had been tied to the dog's lead by its neck.

Mr Bergman said the act was among the worst animal cruelty incidents he had seen. The cat had not been mauled by the dog and there was no way its death could have been an accident.

"The poor thing was doomed. It looked like it had been dragged by a car," he said. "Some people just don't like cats and do crazy things, but this has been done for sick kicks."

The dog's owner and the family who owned the cat, seven-year-old Mischief, were both "shattered", he said.

"This poor cat only had three legs anyway. Its owners were a family with young kids, and it was a much loved family pet.

"I don't know what would possess someone to do that for a cheap thrill. Cruelty to animals is rare in this neck of woods. It makes me sick to my stomach."

    Mr Bergman had contacted police.

"This cannot go unpunished," he said.

Have you noticed that many of the cases involve cats - they are obviously easier to grab and don't put up so much of a fight. This absolutely disgusts me, I hope they catch the offenders and deal them out some 'eye for an eye' justice.
