You know what's got me fucked?? Why is it that the OZ and NZ flight crews were flying at 250ft for 4 days..... but when the Chinese came along on their first day and flew at 30,000 ft they saw it.....???Well that's a relief, they've found it!

When you fly at 250ft, you can only see about 200-400ft either side of your visual area. Are they stupid or what?? No wonder the Chinese are the new brains of the world......

I totally understand where you're coming from, and you're spot on, it wasn't visual - it was either radar or satellite.... (satellite my pick)
BUT..... I flew for a number of years, and did railway line/pipeline/dams/fencing visual inspections for companies in Aussie, and at 200 feet, you only see whats below you that's for sure....
Imagine how big the swell was and then throw in white caps..... you won't see jack shit at 250 ft!
The RAAF and NZAF were spanking their monkeys.....
Oh, and then also throw in the minimum 220kph-ish speed of the Orions......

Yeah .. I get all that ... but they knew what they were looking for and they were in the (approximately) right area ... they were not doing big sweeps looking for anything - they were grid searching looking in a specific area ..
At 220klicks I couldn't even see the bumble bee that came in my helmet and slammed me on the cheek ... (I dforgot to shut the visor) and at 220klicks on our roads I am too busy watching in front to worry about coke cans off to the side of the road ..
