    Occulus Rift goes to Facebook

For 2 billion, what you reckon they'll do with it? fuck it up with likes, or diversify their interests and put out a good product suitable for more than just social media...

Also, has anyone tried one yet? Sounds like they have got pretty tech mature.

For plebs who haven't heard of it, Occulus Rift is a VR headset, 3D view and very low latency head tracking.

Well, so far the appeal has been gaming only.

However, Facebook is certainly trying to diversify, having already bought WhatsApp.

Of course, the other option is that they'll take the IP and shut it down... Google did that with... argh, Kiwi woman started it, forget the company name, but marketing related. Google tying it into Google Adwords (bearing in mind Google's revenue is primarily ad based).

Cool looking piece of kit, would make CoD and the like amusing again and would be awesome for driving simulators.

Interesting that these kinds of things are not yet common when Nintendo (and I think Sega) were playing with the basic idea behind this about 20 years ago.

I don't see how it relates to Facebook at all though, those that have to be on Facebook all the time may benefit from something like google glass but I don't see any use for something this advanced as far as social media goes. Perhaps it's just Mark Zuccerburg (or whatever his name is) seeing an opportunity to make some more money.

Hopefully they don't ruin it with all that like this, show that, friend request Facebook bullshit

I think gaming has been the focus, but by no means the sole focus. Interactive nature scenes, interactive 'nature' scenes were also being developed for it.

Notch (minecraft guy) has said they are halting development on blocky as fuck VR for MC, haven't heard from Chris Roberts about it, but his Star Citizen would have been the make or break for it as a gaming purchase I reckon.

But, as long as social networking shit isn't integrated into the hardware, I reckon it could still make good for all manner of different uses.
