"Look, Madame, where we live, look how we live ... look at the life we have...The Republic has forgotten us."
I voted, and didn't vote for National.
The signing of this is being rushed through, in a small country where any protest will be small. Even national have admitted they are now so invested in this they can't back out... And that's after admitting they didn't get close to the deal they wanted - "We have the best we can."
Signing is less than two months after agreement in November, which lead to the release of the document. It's a huge piece of work with so many bits and pieces added on it'll take teams of lawyers a long time to go through it. So despite a release of the text, there likely isn't time for anyone to accurately assess the impact or consequences. More political manoeveuring.
There are protests worldwide about this, and they are being ignored.
Bear in mind that once signed in February, it only takes 6 of the 12 countries signing to say they're ready to go (within 2 years and 3 months) and whether the other 6 say 'yes' or not - it'll go ahead.
John Key is sticking to his guns. He has some sort of media control so he never has to respond to demands on the really hard questions. He continues to belittle anyone opposed to this, despite some dissenters being far better qualified than he is - he does not discuss the agreement, he does not comment on dissenters other than to say 'they are wrong'. He gets away with this by force of repetition, effectively programming people into believing he is right.
John Key has to head this up. He is the only National party member strong enough, or with enough clout, to not fall apart under real questioning. Next week I expect to see a lot more discussion about the new flag to further screen the signing process.
Protest, revolt, deposition... What do we need for a vote of no confidence?
