The first pic shows the tail end of a very deceptive sweeping corner over the crest of a hill. No speed advisory that I recall ... but quite a few vehicles (cars and bikes) have come to grief on that corner. Some have been killed. Some with a dam sight more experience than Kathy.

"Surprise gravel" is one thing ... but golf ball sized rocks can misdirect the front wheel as it rolls off the rock ... getting you off your line rather quickly. No amount of off road riding is of help then.

It would be a tough call to say it was (or wasn't) avoidable. And anybody taking the same/similar line through that corner had a good chance of the same/similar end result. Regardless of rider experience ... speed ... or the bike being ridden.

    Here's a link to the corner ...

It's a 75k curve, but it is one of the more deceiving curves between Dunedin and Alex. From Roxburgh you have lots of high speed curves and a few really tight ones. This is one of the in-between ones where you can't see the exit and the fact that it is quite a long curve doesn't help.

with all due respect to my Lady it probably was unavoidable... lack of taking all things into account etc... but as I was not with her when it happened I can only guess with what I saw on the day & today... but like you said a tough lesson to learn

just talked to Kathy they've taken her pain relief button away... probably so I don't ring the nurse for her
but she did say she was feeling good & didn't need it anymore & her moon boot is being fitted today so that she can put weight on that leg tomorrow.... sounds like the physiotherapist will be with her today to start things moving... they like to get you going asap so things are looking good

Kathy's do'n great, they got a moon boot fitted on her today & put her in a wheel chair to see how she went...
still can't get out of bed on her own yet, a minor thing...
the boy is in the Army now doing his basic, he only found out on the week end as he was out in the field on ex...
so it just me, just had a hole heap of calls etc... about making sure I'm looking after myself.... cooked my 1st meal in 5 days hadn't even realised I'd not been eating, other than a sammie or crackers when I thought of it... so getting a bit of wild pork or venison & putting in the slow cooker for tomorrow night ... any way I don't think I'd miss a few kg's

Greetings And Best Wishes From TMK

    Heya Shrek

Seriously bad news mate and very sorry to hear about it, not much we can do from here tho.

Best wishes and love especially to Kathy (grunty man hug for you) from us.

Lets hope the operations go smoothly and she is put back together properly.

Love to you both, to the KB team you will have to pick up the slack while we are a long way away.

Greetings and best wished from San Rafael in Argentina.

    Love Andi & Ellen

    Up date

Kathy is being transferred to Dunstan Hospital about 10am if ambo is not in use....

haven't seen her since Saturday, only on 6 hourly meds, has her moon boot on & got a wheel chair which
she is learning to use with foot & one arm will try & get pic's or vid

she is making huge progress, & asked me to say a big thank you again for prayers etc... because they are working

"Please Ring" if you're going in for a visit today to make sure she is there and/or up to it.....

Hope the transfer goes as planned, and that Mrs S' recovery continues apace.
