    If you crash head on with a car similar weight and speed, you will stop as though you hit a wall. So in a head on crash, 100km/h + 100km/h =/= 200km/h.

    However, a panel sticking out, going 100km/h hitting a leg going 100km/h will be at a relative speed of 200km/h because the impact will not stop the leg nor panel. Therefore they aren't acting as a wall to each other.
