Would like to try that on our street - unfortunately I don't have any hair so don't have a hair-dryer! - Damn!

Thinks: (Was she in the nude or just hanging out on the street?)

For those people about to use the new Auckland tunnels...

Right at the entrance. Gotta tax those out-of-towners eh?

You expecting the traffic to flow at more than 80km/h through them?

I'm sure the good folks at NZTA and Well-Connected Alliance have our best interests at heart...

I'd strongly suggest avoiding the tunnels on a bike until we find out how well the ventilation works, and how bad are the traffic jams exiting the tunnels onto the NW motorway.

There's standards covering air flow inside tunnels. It's huge, there's massive fans and serious horsepower involved.

You'll be okay as long as it's not some diesel powered belching black smoke wally trolley with "I support the Greens" stickers on the back window...

Which standard are they working to?

No idea, but I happened to see the new control systems for the Wgtn tunnel upgrade a few years ago.

Like I said, a lot of HP involved, apparently there's a reasonably heavy incoming breeze at both tunnel entrances at peak flow.

One of the changes to the system was driven by a fire in a tunnel in Europe, where the ventilation made the fire dramatically worse, but I don't know how they manage that.

I reviewed the tunnel ventilation for Waterview a few years ago, and was not impressed. They certainly weren't working to what I'd call an appropriate standard back then.

And what aspect of the design did you find lacking, just the capacity?

They had engaged a consultant to recommend limits within the tunnel. But I don't think either NZTA or the consultant had a good understanding of the issues.

As an example, they planned to turn the fans off at a certain time every evening to save power and rely on vehicle motion to move the air. Maybe that is a reasonable approach when traffic is light, but they hadn't thought that using the measurements from their air quality instruments might be a better way to do it.
