    More hi-tech speed cameras

And who said the government was not innovative http://www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times...-speed-cameras

I prefer there was no flash because if seen, spoils the rest of the day.

"monitor traffic in both directions" even though on my gv250 the bike will fall apart before any attempt of reaching past 104km/hr, I assume it does mean possible increases in infringement notices for us motorcyclist being snapped from the rear.

    Happy and safe (wet) Easter!

Digital cameras that are networked back to base. hmmm, this would have the ability to record all vehicles license plates that go past and record the speed they were doing and when they went past. Big brother is slowly becoming a reality... Next step would be to check a database if the vehicle that went past has a Reg and Warrant and send out fines as well.

Fixed cameras, ya know they are there, people slow down to go past them and speed back up. You can acheive the same thing with speed bumps, so it really seems like revenue gathering to me.
Most GPS systems will even tell you where fixed cameras are, so before getting a ticket spend the money on a GPS instead.

Speeding doesnt kill people. Inattention to the driving definitely contributes to accidents that are made worse by speed. I ask the cops to do more to get people to pay attention to driving than cracking down on speed.

What the cunts are really up to is setting up a point to point camera system that can work out your av speed over a certain distance and
send u a ticket .They will probably only work independantly until the network is in place and it will be too late for us to have a say.

Nice link. Sounds like they're encouraging us to do a time trial! Is that entrapment!?

You are right that will come eventually, the new motorway signs and the digital 'info' ones in provincial areas are already lug n play set up for that already. They just need the cams and software package.
Not really a worry for average joe motorist or bikers even. PITA for trucks who need to record times vs real world journey...
    But some quick calculations:
Its roughly an hour and twenty to Taupo from Napier over 129kms I think. Now you can have some fun on the road getting there but you always get held up by somebody.
The numbers given work out to 96kph average speed.
An urban legend amongst the trucking community is that the CVIU says no truck journey can be legally done above 81km/h average speed.
Heard of guys been had up for the cop saying hey you got to here too quickly but don't know of any successful prosecutions...

The one in the gorge in Wellington is supposed to already be doing that.

Interesting read ... the first thought provoked in my head is "what sort of society behaves like this FFS" ... too much television perhaps!

There's an old joke that goes: a guy gets pulled over for speeding and is asked by the cop if he knows the speed limit is 100km?
the guy replies yes i know it is but i wasnt going to be out that long.....

If it can be networked, it can be hacked. Someone should hack 'em to show only unicorns whenever a motorcycle rides past...

    Too much effort, they already have the facility for different limits, bikes=200; campervans=-35;

Average speed cameras have been a fact of motoring life in the UK for many years. The M25 (aka 'world's largest carpark') has variable speed limits combined with average speed cameras. To be fair, the variable speed limits seem to work.

Of course, the key word in this is 'average'. So if you were unfortunate enough to hit the first camera at (say) 111km/h , stop and park up, have a smoke or coffee, and then carry on.

Oh... "Police said the sites had been chosen based on a national ranking of proven risk for speed-related crashes." Just like the locations of the mobile "traffic safety cameras," then.
