    Teknic - Powerskin

My wife and I both have Teknic riding jackets, but mine is older and even though it says "waterproof" its not, even after using waterproofing spray. But one of my wifes jackets is quite large on her and I am just able to fit it. Its got this thing called "Powerskin" I decided to try it as I knew mine would not be waterproof. I rode to work in drizzle and it was great. On the ride home to day in Welly is friggin bucketed down, I mean bad and big wind. This "powerskin" jacket kept me dry the whole way home, I was quite blown away and amazed. No rain suit nothing other than the jacket and I was dry when I got home. Pretty cool shit.

Power skin is great as long as you keep it clean and not too tight. When it. Starts to leak overnight in a bath of sport wash does wonders. You'd be disgusted at the colour of 20,000 kms old water. Lol.

Timely information - my Teknic Freeway recently become not waterproof and is now soaking in a bath of Nikwax Sportwash. And yes, I am disgusted.

All the little pores fill up with pollution and sweat.

I knew if I waited patiently my question would be answered... "What sort of sportwash do you use?"

The other problem is that Teknic no longer exist... bit of a shame as their gear is/was good quality and fitted well!

I have only ever used a brand by that name. White bottle. Need some more actually. I believe nik wax do one as well. Any reputable bike shop should stock.

Important thing to look for is silicate free. It is the silicates that block the pores and create a mode of transmission for the water.

Still leak after a good soak and thorough wash? I use Gekko Guard but I hear good things about nik wax.

Nikwax products are available also from the likes of Katmandu or Macpac - probably anywhere that sells Goretex (or similar) products.

Real bummer that. Got a pair of awesome summer gloves off them late last year to replace the previous ones that I got over ten years out of.
Wasted heaps of time trying to find them for some winter stuff before realising they gone.

Agree that it's a shame Teknic have gone - understand that Teknic were bought out by a competitor / retailer. There has been quite a bit of discussion on this on US forums.

In the meantime - I keep a very close eye on what is coming up on TradeMe... recently acquired a pair of new-old stock Teknic kevlar summer gloves for about a third of their original retail price...
