    TV coverage of NZ racing?

to take this discussion of facebook,

is it worth the 20K (which is the figure thrown around) to film a round of the NZ superbike, or NZ MX champs, for it to go on TV 3 months later, on a sunday afternoon?

are we not better to spend half that money on getting a walk up crowd, that pays to get in?

NOW you're being silly - you KNOW I have an opinion.

Lets be honest, you're asking on here so you have written stuff to refer to, 'cos there's no way you'll remember 99% of what you talk about at the AGM

The money would be so much better spent on hiring a proffessional promoter/commisioner

Most struggle to understand that there IS a difference between putting our BEST ( in theory that's what the Champs are ) on't tele in an effort to gain traction with the mainstream non-motorheads, and the need to generate a good walk-up crowd to recoup some of the pretty big costs involved in ANY Nationals event ( with the odd exception )

Yes, there is a school of thought that the TV coverage panders to the Distributors - also true that without their support the Nats rounds will be another Club Day, without the sizzle and spectacle that the flash harrys on "factory" bikes and all the attendant glossy setups bring.

As I've said elsewhere ( multiple times ), I HAVE engaged the services of a "professional" promoter to investigate taking the RR ( REAL RACING ) Nats up a peg or two - but when he saw the numbers, he walked, never to be heard from again

This is why its imperative that ALL our Competitors get involved with and support their own Club before running their mouth - when they see just what is involved in a Nats level event, may open their eyes a tad ........

Ita also why the MNZ Board instituted the much-loathed "Championship Protocols" - so many were grizzling about their events running at a loss, something had to change. Certainly in MY time as Commissioner, there was no way I wanted to inflict a financial loss on any Club stepping up to run a round of the Champs, and I know Billy shared this point of view.

When we saw the numbers from what are effectively event budgets, its not hard to see why some succeed and some fail

CRIKEY!!! I can hear the paper bags rustling as the crazies awake,Best I get in fast before this turns into yet another "Maggie Thatcher benefit".
    Short version,
When I took over as commissioner I researched the figures to justify what was going on before moving forward,After around 9-10 months of smoke and mirrors,Heres what I managed to extract.

Productions costs of $16,500 per round and then TV 1 would not show it on free to air unless the $20,000 advertising campaign was undertaken,Therefore to air limited coverage of a 5 round series(By limited I mean Supers and 600s only) would cost over $100,000 AND the series sponsors demanded it in return for their investment.

    Sponsors investment:

So after even more smoke and mirrors that began with the statement "The sponsorship covers it"
It complied of at that stage,For roadracing 5 distributors @ $2,000 and 1 oil company $5000 = $15,000,Now I cannot categorically state that this is 100% correct due to the information(Or lack thereof) that I struggled to attain from the board and office,BUT it is pretty damned close at the very least,Therefore,Cost = $100,000+ funding outside of MNZ= $15,000 leaving us -$85,000 or more.

The statement made by Phil Dark that "In sport without TV you are dead" is backward thinking in my opinion(AND that is ONLY my opinion and not part of any concensus I have been involved in),My vision was to aim for the future which I see as the internet,Its common knowledge that in future years,People will not own a television but will instead view all material online,Its already started and I thought we should get in at the start as opposed to 10 years after everybody else,Enter Grant Collingwood and his Ctas system,Brilliant,Every second of every practice,Qualifying and race !!!! Yea I know "But its not primetime TV" BIG DEAL,When outfits like the Americas Cup organisers and the EPL start using it as an added tool and recognise its benefits,Shouldn't we be getting in on the action as well,Why the hell do we have to be followers???? Why can't we be the leaders,Even if it is just this once FFS,

Also,I question why MNZ have not contracted Grant or Purchased his business,WHY can't we utilise its benefits for,Moto X,Supercross,Enduro,Cross Country and even trials AND promote the thing for christs sake,Sell advertising and so on,Then we could really get some promotion of motorcycling WORLDWIDE,Not just on the VERY occassional Sunday and within NZ, Total cost to MNZ for Grants services at the recently completed NZSBK 2014=$6000.00.

So your choice TV at a huge cost with limited coverage,Or Livetiming and streaming,Worldwide,ALL disciplines,Limited cost,Yip at the moment Grants system is not up to the same quality as Phil Darks production,What say we took ONE years TV investment and poured it into Ctas ???????

Did I mention this was the short version????
