    TC 185 rebuild

    Hey all,
I have just got hold of a TC 185, from what i can tell its a 1975. It needs alot of little things done to it, clutch and break lever replace. The piston (has a hole in it), rings etc replaced. Electrics seem to be working.

I am able to do the work that needs to be done. But dose anyone here have or know of a good source for aftermarket parts for this bike? Im thinking going new with the parts i replace instead of second hand depending on price though. I am in waimate south island so need localish or good shipping price.

    Cheers for any help/suggestions MK

If this is your first rebuild of any bike ... good for you. But do not regard it as a cheap investment to get an as new running motorcycle.

New parts for that age/model will be available (if you look and are patient) ... but at some cost.

If the motor doesn't run (with a hole in the piston ... I doubt if it could) ... the electrics that do seem work will only be lights.

They weren't that remarkable in their day ... but most farms had one.

But good luck with your project ...

    TC 185 rebuild

Not new to doing up motors of this nature. Just not used to doing the whole bike up. When I wAs up north I used to get good aftermarket parts from gb Suzuki. I tested spark etc all seem to be working using kick start so should be alright. Just want to find a good dealer round these parts.

Gawd I was when that came out and I remember them

Off-shore for parts would be cheapest I'd say. Post some pix, take me down memory lane.

I had one of these back in the 70s. Great dual purpose bike.

I may still have a service manual- will check when I'm back home later in the week.

Great little workhorses. I have had a couple. My brother destroyed my last one. Probably got parts around here somewhere. Will have a look around, if I remember.

    TC 185 rebuild

Thatd be awsome if ya could have a look around Unstuck, there are a few parts i need and am willing to pay for them and shipping. keep me in mind next time your in the bike bits section of your garage. Also thanks Moise that'd be great if you could find it.

Also dose anyone around here know what the original piston and barrel size was, i cant find it anywhere on here, and bike shops have had a bit of trouble finding for me apparently. I have seen on eBay ts 185 and tc 185 pistons being sold as the same thing, are they the same?

my brothers and myself had TS 125 and TS 185 in those days. Rode many TC's on farms. My understanding was the only difference was in the gearboxes.
My TS 125 popped a hole in the piston on a regular basis. Turned out the points had not been lubed where they run on the cam on the flywheel, the cam had worn down and the points weren't opening enough, turn on the lights it would backfire and blow flames out exhaust and go pop, i carried a spare and could change piston on the side of the road in 20 minutes (heaps of practice) Anyway wouldn't hurt to check flywheel cam for wear, no one i new of had this problem. You can use a torch with wires coming out of it that when touched lights up. Put one to earth and one to points main wire, turn flywheel, light should light up when timing mark on flywheel and housing line up. Sorry can't remember points gap but it needs to be correct. Good luck with your restore. I have great memories of mine.
