The polytech courses seem damn expensive for hobby/diy level, is this something you can self teach/read books etc or do you really need to learn from a pro???
Not that I've got space or money for a decent welder anyway

fuck a decent welder. A couple hundy buck arc welder will handle any shit youre likely to do. Except stainless and ally. For which god invented gas torches.Cool stuff. Engineering related but not quite in the same league I like watching some of this guys welding vids.
