You know the riders/athletes that spend every day training on all sorts of gym equipment and motorcycles, not smoking durries and getting drunk.

    Honestly...

BuT eLeCtroniCS dO aLl tHe WorK.

All from some cunt that's never spent a second on a race track

I dont agree with that, being that Modern Mgp riders would have managed to do well, but this needs to be balanced with they require a completely different skill set to ride than a pre unleaded 500GP bike
Which is why so many ex 250 GP riders failed to make the transition it wasnt the speed as the lap times 250/2 vs 500/4 were not that different
It was different riding style that favoured the rear wheel steerers "IE dirt track"
lets look at the 500 GP champions 83-98

    1983 United States Freddie Spencer
    1984 United States Eddie Lawson
    1985 United States Freddie Spencer*
    1986 United States Eddie Lawson
    1987 Australia Wayne Gardner
    1988 United States Eddie Lawson
    1989 United States Eddie Lawson
    1990 United States Wayne Rainey
    1991 United States Wayne Rainey
    1992 United States Wayne Rainey
    1993 United States Kevin Schwantz
    1994 Australia Mick Doohan
    1995 Australia Mick Doohan
    1996 Australia Mick Doohan
    1997 Australia Mick Doohan
    1998 Australia Mick Doohan

Every one of those is ex dirt track Aussie or Yank
In this period none came through 250 champ to be 500 Champ. Caladora was close as was Kokinski, But lil john was Dirt track anyawy
Rainey rode a 250 season way back but had little success Freddy did a double but started off in 500 and was dirt track and a freeken alien in him prime

    But since then
aside from a few blips Robert JR and Stoner they have been nearly all euro as the bikes and likely the sponsor's money favored the ex minmoto Latinas
I don't think Hayden was ex dirt (but not sure.)

    1999 Spain Àlex Crivillé
2000 United States Kenny Roberts Jr.
    2001 Italy Valentino Rossi
    2002 Italy Valentino Rossi
    2003 Italy Valentino Rossi
    2004 Italy Valentino Rossi
    2005 Italy Valentino Rossi
    2006 United States Nicky Hayden
    2007 Australia Casey Stoner
    2008 Italy Valentino Rossi
    2009 Italy Valentino Rossi
    2010 Spain Jorge Lorenzo
    2011 Australia Casey Stoner
    2012 Spain Jorge Lorenzo
    2013 Spain Marc Márquez
    2014 Spain Marc Márquez
    2015 Spain Jorge Lorenzo
    2016 Spain Marc Márquez
    2017 Spain Marc Márquez
    2018 Spain Marc Márquez
    2019 Spain Marc Márquez
    2020 Spain Joan Mir
    2021 France Fabio Quartararo

    Out of these
    Valentino Rossi
    Marc Márquez
    Jorge Lorenzo

Have gone from 250 or moto 2 to win 12 of these moto1 championships

Not better skills, just different skills

I think they would find them very different. Modern 500s with electronics would be far less savage, just as big bang and unleaded allowed European 250 riders to do well as opposed to the dirt trackers of old in early 90s.

But modern riders would adapt. Or at least some would. MM would obviously excel no matter what. Perhaps there would be a wider spread. The aliens would become more apparent.

Oh God. Does this make me an old cunt??!

Golly I'm an empty cunt from 3 min ago.

    Or maybe an empty penis.

I love Friday nights. And lunch times when I came home for lunch. And Thursday nights.

What will the rest of the weekend bring?

Sorry, I came to this late. Comparing champions from different eras never actually produces anything of value but it does pass the time over a winter brew. As such it's a bit unseasonal but OK.

I believe Hayden knew his way around a flat track. Rossi used to train in a quarry on a dirt bike with tyres that had the knobs removed. Marquez trains on dirt as do other current riders.

Schwantz and Rainey etc were used to the 'light switch' power bands, the current crop have not experienced that. The best would adapt.

There used to be a full account of Alan Shepherd's trip to Daytona on the 'Net. I haven't been able to locate it lately. It's an amazing tale of a trip that started in East Germany during the Cold War. I just can't imagine any of the current riders doing what he did.

Oh i agree i was meaning though dirt background Rossi and Jorge and others all practiced Dirt track Rosssi has his own track andi think there was a Roberts school set up in Spain.
I have posted it before but Roberts ranch training seasons in the 90's etc were all on beat up XR100's.

The cream rises to the top.
Doohan and Rainey could do it all, Shwantz had the biggest balls and was the latest of the late breakers.
Caladora and other euros in that generation had the talent but not much success on a 500.
Who know how much difference the sponsor money made also or makes now

So back on topic. Forced to do a four wheel road trip on Saturday to Chch and back. Pulled left somewhere after Timaru to let a bike past, then my daughter laughed at him. How much control do you have when your legs are straight out in front of you at something getting close to 90 degrees apart? And I mean straight out, no bend at the knee whatsoever. Got funnier when he started warming his tyres through Temuka, if it was not for the tin pot helmet I could have sworn I was following old #34. The only way it could have been topped off was if the old guy in the ute he was tailgating hit the picks and put him on the flatbed.

Not sure what kind of bike it was but it was the highlight of my 1,000km weekend.

Not a rant but seems a good place to post..
Have a good story to tell... my in laws have an elderly friend in his 90s who comes to visit in his car but he didnt come this week. He rang to explain...he visited a friend in vinegar hill rd and, as usual, left his keys in the ignition. It was parked in their driveway. And yep, he came out and it was gone. They rang the cops, cancelled all his cards and he got a ride home.
Next day, the lady rang him to tell him the car had reappeared in the drive. So he went to pick it up and it had a bunch of paperwork on the passenger seat which was receipts for repairwork done and a new WOF. All up $800. Turns out some auto workshop was to pick up an identical car from 3 doors along and just assumed it was all go for them with keys etc!
