I experienced a most intriguing encounter this morning at Taupiri. Thankfully Balu was with me (enjoying the chance to be a front seat passenger instead of usual driver). Coming out of Huntly around 8.15 this morning, heading south, I passed one of two cars ahead of me on the overtaking lane where the speed zone changes from 70 to 100. The second car was a little further ahead so rather than flooring it to get past I decided to tuck in behind.
The driver of that car continued to chug along at 80 coming out of the passing lanes and after several seconds of clearly not intending to go any faster I flashed my lights at him. Once. No horn. No "hand signals". One little 1 second light flash.
Well the response was immediate. I got the one finger salute, another hand signal out the window (which I did recognise as meaning "wanker"), a couple of ciggie butts flicked at my windscreen, plus several other bizarre hand signs - although he favoured the wanker and middle finger most.
Not bothering to respond to him I just continued to sit at 80, until dropping to 70 the 70 approach to Taupiri mountain. I indicated left to move into the roundabout to head south when he suddenly lurched his vehicle in front of mine and came to a sudden stop. My initial reaction was "um, why is he stopping when there are no other cars entering the roundabout?" Ah, that was about to be answered. Very loudly, very physically; he was apoplectic.
As he got out of his vehicle (little grey demio) I immediately ensured my central locking was engaged; and he stormed up to my car yelling with rage about what "fucken dumb bitch" was I to "think I could drive at 100 in a 70 zone". When I said it was 100 back before the speed zone; he screamed at me again "fucken dumb bitch, I'm a Maori (yes I could see that) and he knew he was right that I was trying to speed in a 70 kph zone" (um, no, I dropped to 70 at the LSZ while he continued to drive at 80). While yet again reiterating my ignorance and female dog status he decided to punctuate it with a haka stance and eyeball me. While many responses were going through my mind, I decided that saying nothing and just looking back at him was probably the least provocative thing to do.
As he moved to his car I didn't bother to have a wee korero with the car behind me as I didn't know whether mr. ignorant hori (who looked like he was on P) had any other surprises waiting in his vehicle for me - I dropped into first and left him at the roundabout.
Has anyone else had a colourful road rage encounter such as this? We even drove back home via Taupiri to check that I hadn't missed a temporary speed change in the area ( I hadn't) so I can only conclude that he was under some type of delusion that I was disrespecting "his"? mountain or that his racial status entitled him to make a speed change in the area (that only he knew about)
