I haven't been right around the track, missed Lukie Heights, also I had the corporate hospitality thing going on but was thinking about this for someone else.

Can't remember how elevated it is, but at the start of the straight you can see the bikes coming around the last turn, the biggest turn in GP racing, and heading up the straight to the finish line. There is usually one of the big TV screens right across the track from there so you can see what's going on elsewhere.

Oh, and it pays to have a small FM radio as there is a continuous broadcast from the track, interviews and commentary.

A former colleague recently asked about doing it on the cheap so I asked a guy who had been on one of my trips but had done it alone previously. He had been in the stand at Siberia and the bus had dropped him off right by the stand. The following is his reply to my recent question. It would pay to check though that nothing has changed since.

At Melbourne airport get a return ticket to the city on the RED Bus
They are straight out the terminal
They will drop you off at your accommodation

    I stayed at
    http://greenhouse.melbourne-hostels.com.au/

it’s a backpackers with a choice of rooms, close to everything, however there are lots of options, about a 5 min walk to the bus
But get something that’s close to federation square. That’s where you catch the bus each morning out to Phillip Island
Takes about 1 ½ hrs but I reckon it’s the best way to do it

That way you get to see a bit of the country and go down to a few good pubs down town
Try Young and Jacksons..been stuck there a few times

Just book your bus tickets, catch a coach and also your Moto GP tickets from the Aussie Moto GP web site
Real easy and it’s the pretty cheap compared with other options
Would def do the same when I go back

Yeah P , I always prefer to keep wandering and I get access to stands for nicks.
You can usually get up close and see everything from different angles.
I'm just sorting out Sepang for Oct. Book now and you can get fares for 1300 bucks ! Never been there so don't know how close you can get.

main grand stand is by far the best viewing. Its fucking hot so access to the hospitality on the grandstand side (rather than the pit lane) is a very big plus unless you like sweaty balls.

For anything race related from arai helmets, to sprockets and chains, XT Lap timers, HRC parts you name it, Kev can get it www.racesupplies.co.nz

For Sepang I'd go for the deluxe air conditioned option:
    A) it's seriously hot with high humidity
    B) and they hold it during a season when rain during the main event is rather more than just a possibility.

You might be able to wander around taking photos I guess, but being able to get back to airconditioning occasionally might make the difference between comfort and heat exhaustion.

I did live in Malaysia for a coupla years but these days I carry much more insulation, as in keeping the heat in...

Us 'gold Card' boys like our comfort huh. I intend avoiding the humidity as much as pos.
I hear KL is not far away from Sepang ? Just sorting a hotel where my contacts will be.

    Transport is not expensive.
Last year we stayed at Shah Alam, which is a looong way (50km) from Sepang and the airport.
The taxi from the airport cost NZ$28! A mate said he hired a taxi for the whole day for NZ$50...

I think you can get the train from KL to Sepang.

It actually wasn't that humid last year, btw.
