Hmmm, I'd look up a loom diagram for your car and see where the wires are supposed to come from and colour and go from there.
Often these are bypassed by plugging the exhaust usually with an old spark plug and a resistor or a jumper on the end of the leads. The lead is usually under son insulation tape back at the root of the loom. Seen that a few times on used fords / mazdas. Especially those services in new Lynn.
I ain't a mechanic but saw this a fair bit working at the car yard, looking at trade ins.

If the 02 sensor is disconnected or covered in crap, the ecu should switch to limp home mode and the engine check light will come on, I would have thought. Are you sure it is the 02 sensor? Have you had a look at the maf sensor, If you do get into it, dont touch the sensors inside, just clean with carb cleaner.
