The normal three offenders
- Timing (you have not mentioned rough running / lack of performance so ruled out)
- Not enough Air (air flow from go to wo)
- Too much fuel (injectors, efi etc issues less likely, sensors wrong / bad info to efu probably)
If Carb then a good old fashioned tune up, known issue for Fords is choke
If injected then start from o2 / Airflow and work your way in.
You've got to start somewhere, O2 Sensor has been mentioned so find it and work your way back from there.
I've found 02 Sensors half way down the exhaust system under cars before.
Easy to test it (vid below) are real bastards to get out.
