1982 Honda VF750C or V45 Magna Spark Modules?

My brother has one of these bikes. The styling isn't my cup of tea, but it's a nice engine. Unfortunately the spark ignitor modules are on their way out and he's finding replacements are a little hard to find.

Does anyone have any? A pair is needed. We have seen V4-Spark's website, but would like to find something cheaper if at all possible.

I don't recall the site, but he has seen some available new from the US. I think he was hoping to find some for less dosh...

Unfortunately the sites we've tried, including the ones HDC suggested, have been unable to help. It may be time to bite the bullet.

Of course, s/h modules could well have the same issues as the ones he has.

I,m pretty sure guy supplies uk think its called V4spark.com but the ones done in Auckland for GS bikes have been used . if he contacted the guy off trademe he maybe able to program them to suit.
    cheers
does he have a manual as I,ve got gen 1,2,3 and early vfr ones . hope he swap boxes over to make sure it was boxes as pickups can cause same issue. their are terminals on the circuit boards that corrode and sometimes just need to be re- soilder.

    AL box version

Complete unit in a new aluminum enclosure (OEM small box for size comparison)

These are all new modern microprocessor controlled replacements for the failing 25-30 year old OEM spark modules in Honda 1980's V4's. I had replaced one of my failed originals with a used one off E-bay, and a year later that failed :-(. This looked like a fun project and ignition control is not new for me having previously developed MegaSpark for MegaSquirt. The main goal here is a reliable OEM stock replacement made of all new electronics, including a new wire harness and new connector, but I have added a couple of extra features - user adjustable timing and a coil-on-plug (COP) option.

    Available for 82-86 V45, V65, V30, and 700, both Magna and Sabre.

Two versions are available. For the OEM version, send in your original OEM module and I replace the "guts" with all new electronics. The AL version comes complete in an aluminum enclosure. This is just slightly smaller than the original so fits with out any modifications to the module holder. You will probably want to add some padding.

I started this Sept '12 and have ridden over 10,000 miles.

    Review with video

Project thread on v4musclebike.com forums (skip to the later pages if you just want to get to users feedback)

    USB Interface (requires windows)

    Some features -

    • Coil output uses a dedicated ignition coil driver designed for automotive use - rugged & reliable, specifically designed for driving ignition coils
    • Voltage regulator (which steps 12V down to 3.3V for the microprocessor) is also an automotive use part - protects against reverse voltage (battery + and - reversed) and alternator voltage spikes
    • Add rev-limiter to early models
    • Works with the factory original pulse generator
    • Use factory original coils or after-market "high" resistance (2 ohms and higher) TCI (not CDI) coils
    • COP (Coil On Plug) option adds a 2nd coil driver - still waste-spark, so no cam sensor, fires in unison with the 1st coil
    • USB interface allows for user settings adjustment and firmware updates (windows required)

How much more Power/MPG will I get with this?

A old ignition system can cause a loss of both power and gas mileage if is it no longer operating properly, so you may get a restoration of power/MPG. It just depends on the condition of what you currently have. Note though there is not a reason to expect any power or gas mileage gains over a properly operating OEM module. Creating more power is done by moving more fuel and air into the cylinder, and the ignition system just simply does not affect that. You have to change carbs/jetting, intake, cams, exhaust, etc to get a real increase.

    <= Verification of advance curve

Pink is the V4 Spark and blue an OEM V45 module.

I have been testing OEM modules to verify the timing parameters. Even if your module seems to running OK, if might be starting to fail. This OEM module is starting to get erratic at higher RPM's.

    Installation
    1. Unplug/remove your old module. Note there is a latch on the connector - depress to release.
    2. Check that the connector on the bike harness is good condition, terminals are clean, and none are pushed back or loose. You can get new connectors from vintageconnections.com (part HP6L Latching Set White Nylon) or cycleterminal.com (look under Connetors -> .110-2.8mm -> Locking Type).
    3. Install and plug in the new module(s). Add some padding if you are using the AL boxed version - it is 1/4" narrower (1/2" narrower than the big box). I have found 1/4" door/window weather stripping works well. Units with a red sleeve on the wire harness have the rev-limiter enabled. Plug this one into the red connector that connected to the "big" box. On early pre-rev-limiter models with 2 small boxes, plug it into the bike harness connector with two blue wires (one of which will have a yellow band).
    4. Ride & enjoy.

For COP, follow the wiring diagrams here.

    Troubleshooting

One of the spark modules also drives the tachometer (the other one drives the fuel pump). An erratic tach is a pretty good indication that you have a bad module (though not conclusive, could be a tach problem, and you could still have a module problem and get a good steady tach). Swap the two spark boxes to see if the problem follows the box. Easiest is to try a good known spark box (though if you had one you probably wouldn't be here). Check the connector for loose, bent, or dirty pins.

There are two LED's (on the OEM box version, the box end needs to be removed to see these). One LED will flash steadily (early OEM box firmware versions do not do this). This will let you know that the module has 12V power and is a live. Starting with firmware version "e", this LED will quickly flicker if, when the engine is not running, the pulse generator output looks off. Follow up by checking the pulse generator with a meter. (What is the different between flash and flicker here? Flash is slow enough to count the blinks, 1... 2... 3... Flicker is way too fast to count them)

The other LED will blink as it sparks. This will let you know that it is getting trigger pulses from the pulse generators. If you are not seeing this, then there is a problem with the pulse generators or wiring to them. If you are seeing this, then there is a problem with the coils, wiring to coils, plugs wires, spark plugs.

Some of the original pulse generators are also starting to fail. If you are having trouble after installing the new modules, this is a likely cause.

    Wire Color Function
    Black +12V
    Green Ground
    Blue Pulse generator +
White Pulse generator - (tied to ground)
    Yellow Ignition Coil
Red COP 2nd Ignition Coil (may be present even if individual COP option not installed)

OEM box version DIP switch settings

These may change with firmware version, shown is latest. After changing, the module must be power cycled before they take affect.

    DIP switch settings
    ^ = ON, v = OFF
    Switches 1-5 = Application ^vvvv V45 Magna/Sabre, 82-83
    v^vvv V65 Magna/Sabre
    ^^vvv 700 Magna/Sabre, 84-86
    vv^vv V30 Magna

    Purchasing

Shipping in the US is via USPS Priority mail which is tracked and includes $50 of insurance - contact me if you wish to purchase more insurance (shipping insurance covers you, not me).

International defaults to 1st class mail, which is cheapest but neither tracked nor insured - contact me if you would like a different method. These modules are configured for US market bikes. Contact me to check for models outside the US.

    Contact - te27s5@yahoo.com

Payment via PayPal. ** Please make sure your PayPal address is correct!!! ** Echeck payments take a few days to go through.

Lead time: I try to keep assembled V45/V65/700 modules on hand, but I don't do the settings programming and final test until ordered, so may be a day delay before shipping. V30 and Individual COP are built on order, so these will have a few more days delay as I assemble them.

OEM Box Version (not available for 85-86 700 Magna w/ single box)

    Qty 1: $69.50

    Qty 2: $119.50

Contact me first so I can verify your application. You will need to send your old ones in as I don't have a source for the OEM boxes. I will send you a PayPal invoice when done, usually the next day after I get them.

That's the site I'd seen too. To be fair, $150 or so doesn't seem a ridiculous price, but I know he's fighting for access to his kids after his ex-wife has proven to be the complete bitch blokes dare not think of.

We're half way between his birthday and Christmas, but I might treat him anyway.

Do you have details of the guy doing the Suzi modules?

plus the sabre ones are the same and theirs a wreckers in Invercargill who has parts but I cant remember his name , someone on here may know.
gen 1 sabre,s and magna,s have one bump on starter clutch with pickups 90 degrees apart. vfr 750 pickups work in gen 1 .
    just a reference if needed.
    cheers
ps part number from econohonda nz is 30400-MB0-005 they have two used ones on their stock list .

    Ta.

I tried econohonda (who had one listed when I looked). Phoned, left a message, and emailed. No reply in over a week.
To be fair, I've not followed up on that so I'll try again tomorrow.
