    Quick question about carb balancing

Hi guys I'm new to this forum but been looking around and loving the site so far.
But heres my problem was about to start carb sync my zzr1100 d6 and just before i hooked up all four vacuum pipes to the carbs found my self wondering should i be doing something before this and i was rite, my problem being i couldn't remember which carb was the non adjustable carb and i was suppose to sync the carb sync tool to that.
So first question if I'm sitting on the bike and the carb closes to my left leg in number one carb and the carb closest to my rite leg being number four which one do i hook up to 1 2 3 4.
Second problem being as i am i decided just to connect everything up and just go for it until when i turned the engine over and all the fluid in number 1 on the sync tool shoot up and was about to go into my engine till i hit the kill switch so then i ended up syncing the whole bike with the 2 vacuum gauges. First doing carb 3 & 4 then taken the vacuum pipes of there then going to 1 & 2 then going to 2 & 3 it took forever.
It now runs much better but that ain't good enough for me so if you all would be so kind as to help me out a little that would be much appreciated.

Before starting to balance your carbs you should ensure your valve clearances are all correct.
