Freedom is a right? Tell that to the NKoreans or Chinese?
The vigilance is against erosions both gradual and dramatic, so yeah - of course there is a cost, thats another name for a price.

The North Koreans and Chinese are perfect examples of not being vigilant and having rights taken away. Totalitarian governments are not beamed in by aliens, they are put in by people trading freedom for security

You make no sense. Nothing you have said contradicts what I have said and, indeed, reinforces the need to be vigilant. Rights can, and are given away, often with the best of intentions. That doesn't make the giving up or curtailing of a right a good thing nor one that should go unremarked.

You have a basic misconception of a human right versus taking a right for granted. You seem to think that there is some level of deservedness or earning that must preface having a right. A right does not need to be earned nor, sadly for the talkback classes, deserved. It simply is.

That doesn't mean it can't be taken away - but you had it to start off with and the onus is upon us as members of a society that, allegedly, values freedom, to ensure that the barrier to losing that (or any) right is high.

BTW - driving isn't a right, freedom of movement is.

I'm sure pointing that 'fact' out to anybody who takes yours away will make them change their mind...

It's worked in other countries where somebody has taken their freedom away, hasn't it?
