    Paint stripping advice needed

My project bike came with a black painted front guard (also back guard and nearly everything in between). It is supposed to be chrome and was at some stage and I haven't had any joy finding another one (1983 XV750). I have tried automotive paint stripper from Repco but it doesn't even make the slightest bubble in the top black coat. The black is over a blue coat from another hacked paint job. I can wire brush the paint of but it is bloody tough. Is there another product I could try to strip it or should I just take it to the local stripper (you know what I mean). Has anyone tried those paint stripping wheels on chrome?

Try your local paint shop for identifying the stuff and ask them what to remove it with. Alternatively you could go to the electroplater and ask them to 'dip' it in the acid bath for a bit. Are you wanting to go back to chrome?, if so I would go this way.

Ummm, Tergo industries iirc. Probably a decent autmotive or paint supplier should have it. Let your fingers do the walking.

I put one of those open weave rubber wheelie thungies in me cheap as chips angle grinder and it pulled paint off really well...

Some of it even in place where I intended the paint to be removed

Yeah I used one of them to strip the frame, they take it off in the blink of an eye. I'm not sure I want to risk it on the chrome, but then again I can't use the guard like it is.

Try coating it with brake fluid (DOT3 or 4) and leave for a few hours. It softens most paints, then just hose it off.

Nevr thought of that, it always works when you accidentally spill it!

Ok, I got some Tergo strip and it is bloody good. I no know why they painted the front guard though, it has been smacked around and broken in as few places so once they had welded it back together and bogged it ... yeah well it needed a coat of paint to hide the "craftsmanship". I have replaced my profile picture with the bike as it was yesterday, have a look and tell me what you think so far. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=6364

Hey wired1 that looks good so far, I would go back to basics and do the finishing work on the guard, then continue with your paint job on the guard. This will continue the theme of the bike and give a good finish. Your only other option is to keep trying to find another guard and hope it is in better condition. Or you could go the ultimate and build your own guard, lots of time and even more work but it would be unique. You would need access to a old-fashioned panelbeaters shop, an 'english wheel mill' or metal roller, and a few specialist hammers, but it can be done.
Keep in touch with your plans.

It's nasty shite alright. Apparently it has an anaethesetic (sp?) in it, which is why when you get a blob on you, it doesn't hurt... and why the little specks do hurt. No idea if that's true or not, just what I remember from last time I used it.

As for the pic, looking pretty damn nice already! Bling for you!

Yep - reckon I'd go for a paint job on the gaurd, too, to match the tank. Chrome would be boring by comparison.
