What determines who you vote for?

I was discussing this with a friend earlier this week, after seeing some of the national parties leaked emails, which said that Don Brash should try to buy his way into power by using tax cuts. I didn't have a particular problem with this, however the news seemed to portray that this was a bad thing.
We then got talking about what determines who you vote for.

Do you vote for the party which gives you, the individual the most benefits, or what gives the country as a whole the most benefits?

I want to vote for the ones who don't lie - that's my vote buggered.

I've seen a few interesting policies on various things (too numerous to list) but no one party embodies all the ones I like (and that's assuming they'll actually stick to their supposed policies).

Labour is promising a lot for families, National is digging at speed cameras, revenue gathering, taxation and the 111 sytem in their ads but yeah, like they're really going to do anything to cut the revenue gathering when they've promised income tax cuts - they'll probably up the existing taxes and speed cameras to pay for the income tax drop they've promised.

Libertarianz has some good points but I vehemently disagree with some of their other policies.

NZ First will never get my vote until Winnie is gone and they prove that his replacement isn't as big a liar - and maybe not even then...

And I believe that no matter who you vote for, the government always wins.

Every time in the past I have voted for whom I feel will do best for the country.

They are all such a lying pack of self serving mongrels that I think I shall vote National for 1 reason.

They are talking of reining in the revenue gatherers.

There should be a maximum term so as to stop career politicians from gorging at the trough too long and so that they realise what it is like to work for a living.

They're also talking of funding the new Auckland roading etc earlier than Clarke has promised - if they rein in the revenue gathering and cut income tax, how do they propose to fund it?

Make no mistake, they will have plans for hitting us harder than ever in order to make more revenue than the previous regime - no political party is going to truly decrease revenue gathering...

All they ever do is change the methods of gathering revenue.

Not just slamming National here, not saying Labour won't come up with new revenue gathering techniques (or increase old ones) if they get back in - just saying they're all thieving bastards

I feel totally disgruntled this year, and don't like any of the dishonest, self-serving bastids. If I could, I'd vote "No Confidence". I have neither a decent candidate in my electorate, nor a decent party to vote for. Might do like son#2, for whom this is his first chance to vote: "Meh... it's not worth the effort of walking up the road to vote..."
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....
