Thumbs up Mobile motorcycle pre-purchase inspections (Christchurch)

Hi all, I have recently started up a Mobile Motorcycle and ATV Pre Purchase Inspection service in the Christchurch area. My aim is to give those prospective buyers and particularly new riders or those with little mechaincal knowledge the oppertunity to have their possible purchases propperly inspected to help ensure you dont end up with a headache rather than enjoying riding your new pride and joy.

Pricing Ranges from $50 upwards depending on what level of inspection you would like and additional travel costs where applicable. See website for pricing or contact me for a quote.

I have full "All brand" Fuel injection Diagnostic scanner covering most brands, enabeling me to carry out a thorough inspection of not only the mechaincal aspects of the vehicle but also the Fuel injections systems.

A mobile lazer wheel alignment plant to identify any chassis misalingment from any past accident damage.

Theese along with a variety of other specialist tools aimed at diagnosis allows me to give you a thorough health check on any bike you may be interested in purchasing, allowing you to make a well informed descision before commiting to a purchase.

Im a 15 year Trade Qualified Motorcycle Mechanic with factory training from Suzuki, Triumph & Moto Guzzi.

Please see my website (www.ollymoto.co.nz) for further details and examples of the inspections I can offer and a listing of vehicles covered by our diagnostic scanner, if you have any special requests for inspections i will endevour to accomodate them where possible.

I also offer a mobile dianostic service for any that may have gremlins, specialising in electrical systems.

Feel free to PM me here or Email or call, all contact details are on the website.

Safe and Happy riding as the new season is upon us

Good luck with your new venture. This would be especially brilliant for an out of Towner trying to establish i a flight to chch is justified for that trade me
    Special.

    In dev I was amazed
At how much cheaper bikes in ChCh are by could not afford the risk if it was not as advertised and bought closer to home for a lot more money.

interesting because the received wisdom here is tht bikes are way cheaper in the northern isle land.

PS Olly is a good bastard, recommended.

The DL1000s I looked at for the same mileage and approximate cosmetic condition were 2-3k cheaper than their Dorkland equivalent. The CB900s about 4k.
CB1300 (what I ended up buying) about 3k cheaper for the one and only but that also had full hard luggage compared with an extra 30000kms.

    Except for:
a)occasionally wondering if a dl1000 with luggage or a DR650 might be better for my current commute I am stoked with my choice.
    b) feeling like the bike is too good at its job and maybe a little more character might be called for.

Thanks guys for the positive feedback.

Having heard many a newby rider and seasoned verterain become deflated with their new purchase mostly due to not getting what they expected i hope to be able to provide a clearer picture and guidance to anyone who is considering a new vehicle purchase. With an almost excessive amount of photographic and easily understandable evidence as to the condition of the vehicle they are considering, and if they wish i am more than happy to offer a predicted cost of ownership for the first period they own the bike if any is applicable.

Also one of the Bike Trans Guys is only down the road from me so i plan to discuss with him the possibility of assisting with anyone requiring to have the bike shipped outof the area.

Let me know your thoughts or any other services i could include or orgainse that may be of benefit to prospective buyers either in or out of the Chch area.

I think this is a great idea. I've bought three bikes from a distance, and every time have been lucky enough to have someone I know in the area who can check the bike out for me and take a test ride.

Usual process for me: lots of questions on phone/email, then getting pre-purchase check by local bike shop ($50-$100), friend checks out bike and seller (I figure if the seller seems straight up then you can believe what they say about the bike), then book in with BikeTranz and good to go. Would prefer to pick up the bike and ride it back but it never seems like good timing.

I don't know anyone who rides in the Canterbury area, so could use a service like yours if something comes up (like, say... 990 superduke - email me!).

I'm not sure whether a seller would let you ride a bike, but everything else you suggest sounds good. I've had concerns about money/bike changing hands - so maybe there's a service there that you could provide?

Any vendor should be happy to allow a professional test ride their bike. Most insurances I have had have inclusions for motorcycle trade professionals to evaluate a vehicle.

I also worked in a bike shop for a while and believe me if a shop drops your bike your insurance company has a chat with theirs.

I am sure Olly has spoken to his insurance agent about making sure he is covered for such an event.

I've thought about providing just that service: in the trade it is called an escrow service, So a trusted third party holds the coin on behalf of the seller and buyer pending the buyer saying "yes I am happy with the vehicle" and have received it. Deduct a small fee then pass the coin on. As an Officer of the Court and Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand then the "trusted third party" status thing is easy enough. Why didnt I do it? Two reasons: most distance sales are via tard me and they already offer the "Safetrader" thing, and the volume of sales and potential hassle with my PI insurance and having to draft the terms and conditions and then promote it and whatever seemed like too much of a faff. Basically I dont think there would be any money in it, it would end up being a public service to motorcyclists, and, well, fuck them. ;-). Doing it as a one off is a major faff because of the client care rules and documentation required. The minimum I would have to charge just to cover those costs is $200 plus GST and its probably not cost-effective for a small value purchase.

Tips for buying at a distance: If you can get the thing checked out do so, and if it is registered check out there is no money owing. You will need the VIN number AND the plate number. Failing that you can check out the owner as well. searches in the PPSR cost $3 so there is no excuse to not do it. If there IS money owing, you and the seller MUST deal with the finance company. Because the charge sticks to the vehicle. If you pay the seller and he fucks off with the cash, the vehicle can and will be repo-ed by the finance company which is not cool.

I've used Bike Tranz and they are excellent.

Yes, hadn't really considered SafeTrader - it's certainly cheap compared to what you give as a potential price (and totally understand the pricing behind that). Will have to investigate it in the future.

I guess I was thinking about being a 'one stop shop' if he is organising inspection and delivery already. I can see that the hassle of setting up an escrow service is probably far higher than it is worth for the few people who are likely to use it.

Just out of interest (and knowingly derailing the thread) - what would be the course for recompense if you transferred money to someone in order to purchase a motorcycle and then they just never sent it. Would you have to go through small claims to get your money back? Or is that a criminal offence (hoping it is)?

OP - I would suggest providing what HDC has described above as part of your service - that is, details from VIN/Rego and owner check. Perhaps as additional extras?

Right, I have been thinking some more about this and descided to give my facebook page a bit of a work out. I have descided to offer to sellers (where they agree) that any pre purchase inspections i carry out i will also put their ad on my facebook page with a link to their listing. Was also considering linking here? I have 2 inspections coming up this weekend so permissions pending i will upload the links to them sometime over the weekend.

Check out my facebook page to keep up with bikes i have inspected and that are for sale in the Canterbury region or if you have any requests for services you think may be beneficial to bikers.

    Hi Olly

Great service to be offering there is a real gap in the market out there.

One word of warning I would give you is make sure you have good liability insurance as I can tell you from experience that some peoples expectation of what is acceptable on a used vehicle and what is not can differ hugely. If someone buys a vehicle and is not happy with it , they first go to the person they buy it from and if they get no joy there you may be next in there sights , just be careful

a lot of that will come down to the terms of trade spelling out what, who, how and who's paying.

But you are correct: PL will be worth having.

That crossed my mind too. You can cover a lot with some well written fine print, but it's bloody sad you have to.

I think from the sound of the amount of pictures he will be taking and emailing through to clients most of the ball is still in their court.

Good luck with it all man. I think the add on of sorting freight is great and your price is not so much that someone looking at a 'cheaper' bike will find value in it.

Kinda shooting yourself in the foot with the sellers thing, but I see why you're doing it for now
