Thank you for your input. Work was carried out by a qualified motorcycle mechanic at my home before I took it to the shop. Someone that has made one simple mistake (no matter how terrible it ended up being) shouldn't deserve the description of knowing 'fuck all' and 'knowing absolutely nothing about'.

I'm just looking for an estimate at how long this would usually take a qualified mechanic to do. With just the one (terrible) mistake made, we managed to do it in just under three hours which included taking the head off and re-installing. I told the shop before bringing it in that the problem must lie in the timing / engine top end as everything else (fuel, air, spark etc.) was all in good order. Just looking for an estimate, not a rant about how stupid we are. Cheers.

they're a qualified mechanic, you paid good money for them to do the job. one of the reasons the chargeout rates are what they are is for warranty. why is'nt your qualified mechanic who made one simple mistake (followed by the other simple mistake of turning it over by hand and not finding a tight spot which would indicate that something is a miss and needing rechecking before applying starter motor and making another simple mistake....) sorting this for you?

I used to fix appliances. Turn up with a incorrectly assembled washing machine and its going to take 3 times as long as a repair to ensure its safe to turn it on and test to see what was the original fault.

Lets be honest you already had it in your head a bike shop was going to rip you off and that's why you got Greggs cousins mates ex wifes new husband to destroy your engine for 2 dozen beers.

If you are lucky a few bent valves if not - well - more... Maybe theres more though. What were you originally trying to achieve? ie why did you pull the head in the first place???

Egg Zachary why my bikes go into the shop for anything internal. If you can see it without draining the oil is a good rule of thumb for is it worth a crack. Then season with are you happy to replace it if you fuck it up.

How on earth can you fuck up intake and exhaust cams, they are MARKED intake and exhaust for fuggs sake.. and WHY on earth was your QUALIFIED
mechanic in there in the first place..
The timing marks are on the HEAD for fuggs sake...

take it up the ass and suck it up, you both fucked up and deserve what you have, a lump of shit..

That list is a solid days work
It'll certainly have bent valves by now, I would say a tooth on a sprocket is 12 degrees on one of them and that is enough to fuck valves, let alone with the wrong cams in.
Some Kawasakis have an I and E stamped in to the cam gears, which is why I always mark the bastards
