Misbehaving Ducati, seems fixed but after a sanity check

My ST2 didn't want to go to get me home from work after getting me to work on Thursday. Battery only turned it over a few times then expired, so I figured new battery time, I know from past experience it doesn't like running with a dead battery. New battery installed, after which it would start and idle, but wouldn't rev.

It's now in bits in the garage chasing the problem, it seems to have come right since I removed, cleaned and reconnected the throttle position sensor connector, but now I'm not sure if I should trust it.

Can someone with more knowledge of how these thing work let me know if this sounds like a reasonable cause and/or fix?

When you tryed to rev it what happen, if coughed and splatter could be a voltage regulator, could have fried the battery too

A little bit of throttle and the thing died, giving it more it revved a bit and ran horribly then either died or dropped back to idle.

Was thinking it could be the voltage regulator so disconnected it, and charged the new battery to run the bike from battery only, still exactly the same. I think the battery being dead is unrelated to the problem I was having, other than the fact I had to have several goes at starting the thing when it wouldn't run, just helped lead me in the wrong direction.

The only thing that has made a difference is disconnecting the TPS, cleaning the connector and reconnecting, which I suppose would make sense with the thing dying when given throttle.

Was hoping someone with a few more clues than me could confirm my logic that this would cause it to behave how it was, I guess the best way to find out is take it out for a spin when I've got time to wait for a ride home if it dies...
