Going to come up with something simple to start with and when we know how that works out we will probably go down the track of a quick shift.

I have seen a quickshifter brand connected to a self centring toggle. Flick up to go up or down to go down.
That was on a Honda trike. Rider was on two walking sticks. Paralysed from just below the hips down. Brace with springs allowed him to walk but not move his feet volunteerily. Someone here may know who.

Stupid phone / Tapatalk, apologies in advance.
Easy enough to jimmy something up to move the shifter once clutch is pulled in, bit of logic to determine up or down.
Piece of piss, knock it out in a weekend.

Read of a paraplegic shifter 20 -30 years ago in Two Wheels on A CB750 sidecar outfit. The indicator switch was repurposed to select up or down shift. a microswitch in the clutch lever operated the shift solenoid. Easy as.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

A second lever below the clutch lever, the cable connects to the gear lever. When you pull the lever, it lifts the lever, going up a gear. You just have to power shift. To go down gears, just use the boot as normal, no need for ankle flex down shifting.
