GTX470 worth getting?

I've been out of PC gaming for awhile in that my "gaming machine" is a early 2008 laptop running a 8600GT
So here's the question is a GTX470 with a i7 2.8Ghz 2nd hand worth my cash moneys, we're talking 200$ cash moneys

does also come with 1000w PSU & 6gig RAM but no HDD/optical but all these are cheap &/ transferable from my older machines so not worth considering

Depends, if you want to catch up on the games from 08-12 then yeh, it'll do alright (I'm assuming a full-HD monitor). If you want something for the multiplayer games of today, then it might not do so well, but your CPU is probably a bottleneck there too.

Just want to play with the mates on PC really, and it's not like I'm able to upgrade any of my other machines. I kinda dropped out of "PC gaming" back when DDR2 was a thing

it will be fine for most games unless you are like me and want 60+ fps on Ultra High graphics

it might struggle to run some newer stuff on low

I have that mobo and CPU in my home machine. They're about 5 years old. Just as a point, a newish i5 will kick it's arse.

You probably don't really need a 1000W PSU, but hey, not that bad for $200 (I'm guessing, fark, either the mobo or CPU cost more than that back then).

Yea just searched it now & seen that it's actually 4-physical 4-logical; the 8-core was based off the OS report

Might just go for it, if nothing else I've seen the CPU (used) has just sold on TM for $225 & the MB will at-least handle the latest shit so unlike my current PC graveyard there's room for expansion if I want to just use it as a base

That mobo will not handle the latest shit, that socket is one gen out of date already, with a new gen coming soon^TM

The chipset will also be lacking for many things.

really? I thought they stopped fucking with CPU sockets... anyways from what I can see at this stage the CPU doesn't seem to be a bottleneck, the mobo can handle later GFX cards & it's 200$ so really not much to lose; hell I could just sell it off, make some $$$ off it maybee try get something a bit better... or just buy a PS4 & be done with it again

Nah sockets still change, probably a good part of the reason for that is chipset etc progression. I wouldn't go too much more on the GFX card unless you get a 1440p screen, cos CPU or i/o will become a bottleneck as the gpu gets better.

It's a good deal, but imo, don't expect to keep any of the thinking bits when you decide to upgrade.

Probably just means I won't upgrade again. From what I found tho the CPU isn't much of a bottleneck for people yet, people seem to be running it fine with the GTX 970 with GFX cranking quite fine, some have overclocked a little but still the CPU seems to hold up at the mo... Probably not for much longer admittedly, but you get what cha pay for right & I don't want to be paying alot

Ya won't be able to upgrade to a newer intel cpu with that motherboard and at present an entry level gaming graphics card would be in the 600 series with 2GB dedicated memory; so really comes down to what the requirements are for the games you're going to play.
If the machine specs (esp. processing power) are above the minimum requirements (and closer to the preferred) for your chosen games then hand over the dollars, great deal. If not, leave it for someone else to get and keep on hunting for a well priced but more recent gaming machine.

Well TBH the only reason I'm looking at it is it's cheap & means I can play some of the games I've sorta bypassed like Alan Wake, State of Decay, Tropico 3, Civ 5 etc. It would be nice to have something that'll do the games to come but I'm not prepared to spend that much cash moneys.
I dropped out of "PC gaming" in the late PS2 era due to cost (didn't help that we used to roll with decent kit) & really there's nothing "must have" to draw me back, so if I'm gonna spend a bit of cash moneys it'll probably be a PS4 for the exclusives.

That said my current "gaming PC" is a 2008 laptop w/ 2.5Ghz core 2 duo, 512MB 8600GT, 4GB DDR2 & I've been limping along with that, so almost anythings an upgrade at this stage.
