    pile up in a mall

Police chase ends in shopping mall crash

    13.09.05 11.25am

A police chase this morning ended in a three-car crash in a Christchurch shopping mall leaving six people injured, four of them seriously.

Christchurch police central communications said a police car had been in pursuit of a vehicle when the crash happened.

A St John's Ambulance spokesman told National Radio that paramedics were attending six patients at the scene -- four were seriously injured and three were still trapped in their vehicles.

The crash happened outside the Eastgate Mall just before 10am.

So thats where all the cars were racing to
To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods

Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

A timely reminder why a runner isn't always on. I just hope everyone walks away... eventually.

I'm a little surprised that we haven't had the postings slamming one or other party involved in this yet... a lack of understanding of the facts never seemed to stop this sorta thing before???

They reported 9 injured, including a mother and her baby. I hope these were heavily armed, drug crazed murderers that were being chased through congested city streets, past a shopping mall, by an unmarked Police car.

Actually Lou from what I've seen they weren't being chased at all. A Police car pulled the offending vehicle over as they wanted to speak to a passenger in it who was breaching his bail. The cops got out to chat to him and the vehicle took off shortly thereafter crashing. The cops didn't even have time to get into a pursuit before it crashed.

But hey don't let the facts get in the way of a good old Police bash.

So why did witnesses say the cop car was involved in the accident, let alone the chase?
Why did one cop say the patrol car took off after the offenders, leaving one cop behind?
Good old reliable Indoo, leaps to the defence.

Just read the latest Stuff story, seems one of the passengers in the offending car died overnight. The Police were not chasing the vehicle, they were just following. Quite how you "follow" a car travelling at a reported 100km/h in a what I guess is a 50 zone without "chasing" is unclear to me, but I'm sure the semantics will be explained by the Police in good time.

Story reads like a bunch of dumbarses were baiting the cops, pulling doughnuts in front of the unit that stopped them. Not that a death is ever a good outcome, but perhaps in this case a quality member of society has not been lost?? Who knows.

Yep obviously we watch different channels, did you bother to read the papers as well? I find it pathetic that the media and certain idiots on here instantly jump up without knowing jack shit and cast judgement blaming the Police whenever there is a chase. Its always the Polices fault never the poor criminal who was just forced to run and crash his car into innocent bystanders...

"Peter Shearman watched the pursuit as the police chased the vehicle from Pages Road along Buckleys Road.

It was amazing to see the occupants of the vehicles walk out, although they were covered in blood, Shearman said.

"If the cops had pulled out earlier way back, it wouldn't have made any difference because these guys were going for it. Nobody touched him; he just lost it," Shearman said...........

Andrew Pritchard, who just avoided the smash, said he was surprised the accident was not worse.

"Both the cars (the white Pontiac and the Subaru) sort of leapt up in the air and spun around," he said.

"There wasn't as much blood and guts as I thought there was going to be. There was a baby from the Subaru which had a bit of blood on its head, but it appeared to be all right," he said.

A bystander said people could not believe what they were seeing.

"The police car appeared to be a reasonable distance back. Those idiots in the white car obviously couldn't give a stuff," he said.

Inspector Gary Knowles, of the Christchurch police, said criminal, serious-crash unit and Police Complaints Authority investigations had been launched.

"We weren't chasing the car. The vehicle was stopped by police earlier, and it took off," he said.

"It was not a close pursuit. My understanding from initial witnesses is the police car was some distance from it."

Police appeared to have acted according to "protocols", but communications tapes were being analysed to check everything was done properly.. ...
