Concur. Spend a fortune on flights then expect the locals to give you a cheap / free holiday. Back packing is cool but at least pack common sense and some respect. That multi coloured, Malaysian (I think) chick who was in the press recently ripped my nightie, too. The media portrayed her penniless travels and dumpster diving as, oh so cool. Still a free loader IMHO.

I'm not the most... inviting of hitchers. I reckon most of my rides might have been from thrill seekers.

However hitching even inter city rarely takes me more than 1.5 x the expected drive time.
