    Warning - GSX-R Tail Tidy

I recently purchased a 2014 GSX-R750 which came with a tail tidy installed. Unfortunately it didn't last, not sure how long it was on the bike before I got it. I've done about 1000k on the bike and it's only done just over 5000 in total so hasn't really had much use, even if it was put on when the bike was new.

The picture below shows what happened to it, somehow rather than just flying off the bike (Possibly a good thing as who knows where it would have ended up) it managed to get jammed between the tyre and the rear hugger and did some nasty damage to the tyre. I have included a couple of pics of the breaks where you can see defects in the material. This might well be a one off, but I figured it would be worth letting people know about it. At the very least if I had a bike with one of these on or was looking at getting one of these I would attach some steel wire to the plate bolt hole and fix it to where the tidy bolts onto the bike hopefully that would keep if from doing damage if it did break.

Edit: A big thanks to Cyclespot Honda for their excellent after sales service. I purchased the bike from them a couple of weeks ago, after this happened I gave them a call and the sales guy said to talk to the workshop and they will sort it. Went in today and they replaced the rear tyre without any hassle.

Since I have a CNC machine setup I decided to make a quick replacement. I only had some scrap aluminium in an unpleasant colour. I'll make a replacement with some black powdercoated material and with a few design changes in the new year.

    Thumbs up

I really like the way you incorporated the 'Rego' holder into the tail tidy. You should make some more and flick them up on TradeMe!

That's a bugger about your tyre though.

    Me too! Nice job!!

I'd rubber mount it or put some rubber bungs or washers on the mounting bolts so the vibration doesn't get to it again.
That could have been a lot more nasty if it had locked up the back wheel?

Vibration - hanging out the back like that.

Problem with the design is it's punched out of a sheet with no additional strength in the edge. The the edges rolled over slightly it wouls be so much stronger.

The one you made = Far cooler than most on the market.

The one that was on there = not keen.

    Plus one.
Makes me want one. The Yoshi one I have isn't as good but I could use the plate light from it.

New design looks good, just watch that top fold for the same issues.

That and the stress raisers on the lettering. Hard to tell from pics but it looks like a crack spread half way across from that point before the rest of the material gave way.

Thanks to all for the kind comments on the new tail tidy. It's that crazy time of year where I have about 3 weeks worth of work to complete in about a week so I won't be doing too much in the near future. Might look at making some in the new year once I have had a chance to make a new version for myself with some design changes.

Will definitely be keeping an eye on the fold of this one to make sure it holds up. I helped my brother make one for his bike a month or so ago using the same method (In the thread "SV650 Bits and pieces") it's been good so far. For the sake of a rear tyre and the risk of worse I will likely follow the advice to rubber mount it as well as tie it off with some wire just in case.

For those that have replied and likely won't re read the first post to see the edit. A big thanks to Cyclespot Honda for their excellent after sales service. Top stuff. Good to hear a bike shop looking after a one off like that.
