    In the days of the banana boats (I wonder why they were called that...) transporting bananas (oh, yeah, that might have something to do with it...) through the Carribean, the heat would get to the bananas and they would go off fairly quickly. If a reasonable wave hit, the load of rotting bananas would shift and capsize the boat, usually resulting on loss of life...which is pretty bad luck really, I suppose...hence the superstition surrounding bananas on boats...or so I heard...
