Really appreciate all this advice guys, thanks.

I might wait till I've had a go first and been to a couple of meets before I bite the bullet. You never know, I could get a FXR. Although something like a TF does seem like a cheap easy way to get into it. I'm not really looking for a super fast bike, I'm looking for something cheap (& reliable?) that will allow me to get my teeth into racing, while having a fuck-tonne of fun

The main constraint currently is cost. I'm hoping to spend a few hundred on the bike + another couple hundred on parts etc. Would that even be possible?

Be aware that getting something too shitty will just end up costing more & giving you less enjoyment. A $300 TF might seem like a deal but then you need to buy 17" wheels, rebuild the engine if it has been sitting.

Tyres is the most important thing. Crap road tyres on a fast track will hurt you.
Don't you look at my accountant.

Is there any way for me to 'have a go' before I purchase a bike? Like at a meet or something? I have suitable leathers and a tiny bit of track experience..
You can ride my TS100 and probably organise a FXR , that way you will understand the difference and be able to make a better decision.
FXR might look more expensive but it already has a great handling frame 17"wheels , killer brakes and 13.5hp, super easy and cheap to get 16 or 17 hp
A farmbike has dumb size wheels , feeble brakes, and 12 or 13 hp, all it needs is new wheels, brakes, a propper pipe, and so much other stuff I cant remember
17" wheels is really important so you can run slicks and or a 600 front tyre on the back,
My neighbours diary says I have boundary issues

Putting it like that, an FXR does sound much easier to begin with. Thanks for the offer on the TS100, I'd love to give it a go

Yep, if I come off I'll pay for it. I wasn't planning on hooning around, just want to get a feel for it I'm 6ft 72kg, so may be a wee big lol.

Does it matter that I don't have a racing licence? As in is there a specified slot for newbies to 'have a go' around the track? Sorry I'm pretty much new to all this

You'll be able to buy a day licence at the track. There may even be some tuition available.

Well hey when I was head of the local club a guy had a $40 CB125T and fark he had some fun on it, wasent 1st wasent last, but it was about having fun.
Me yeah my FXR was fast it did me well, but I reckon I had more fun on old shitters my fav was a 125T next a worked stroker, any bike once ya play with it can be less reliable, both my 4 strokes blew the good old stroker just needed regular maintance

I can safely say that was the most fun I've had in a long time. Cheers to everyone who gave me a hand/advice! Was great putting faces to names.

Oh and for those wondering I've bought a FXR150 off Yow Ling
