Entry level DIY stuffs aka how to learn the stuffs?

Just got a GN250 and plan on learning what I can while I got it so I can move up in the world practically and physically. It runs fine but I'd like to learn how to care for her, like keeping the chain clean and tight, basically every single maintenance job I can learn so I got skills to transfer to my next bike.

Also is there a detailed list of what mods could possibly harm a WOF? All I've done so far is removed all the rear factory lights so I have an excuse to replace them to something less ugly. That also allows me to sand and treat the rust on the frame.

In terms of rust maintenance, I noticed some on the rear flywheel/sprocket/ whatever the hell its called. I've also read that upgrading the sprocket (at front) to 39 teeth will give the 250 a bit more grunt in 4th/5th gear so could I possibly just replace both?

Since my bike is '05 some of the parts are shit, as whole bike is made in china and stainless steel stuffs has traces of other stuff thus RUST. So to help its resale value, which will happen when I get experienced enough for an upgrade, I'm looking at what I can do. But I'm scared of just taking things apart as I have no idea what I'm doing. Is there anywhere I can learn? Even online?

Also. Have any of you upgraded the headlight to LED? should I bother? Noticed a cruiser with two LED spots left and right of the main headlight to improve visibility. That's pretty much all I'll use them for as I can't see shit at night whether in a car or bike or attempting to walk.

Wouldn't bother doing any mods yet, you may find you out grow it fairly quickly and move onto something a little better.

Not worth an HID, you need the proper reflector or you'll blind the shit out of everyone/get fined/fail WOF's. Maybe some cheap LED's off aliexpress or dhgate. Good chance to tinker with some wiring/learn a bit about it.

You can get good high/low LED headlights now too (H4 etc) for under $100, ish, but just a better bulb full stop can make a world of difference and add some LED's either side.

so I assume my next best bet is to join a club that has regular maintenance days so I can get experience? yuh tis good being a girl when you can get things done by smiling and waving. But there is the unfortunate side of fending off unwanted stuff when guys DO NOT get the hint.

I'm gonna get some black BBQ spray to do the engine, is there anything I could possibly fill up with spray that will inhibit its amazing running power? ie the socket can handle some overspray?

And if I'm not replacing the rear sprocket, should I wire brush and spray it in place or take off chain give it a clean (looks like it needs it) and THEN attack? and would that be in situ or should I take it off completely?

thanks for the HID light info.. doesn't sound worth it in this case. I've already got enough wiring experience thanks to the rear lights I already cut off - the tail light was made so cheap that you need to cut the wire to get it off anyway... But as I said it's so ugly. I don't mind the look of the GNs apart from the rear indicators, tail light and factory mirrors. but all that is a matter of like $50 and a soldering iron, one thing I DO know how to deal with.

Also forgot to ask about seals, mine look cracked and dry from up close but still seal, are they easy / cheap to replace? Or do I just wait until they go / sell before then

find the two threads for the Auckland groups and ask around most people are more than happy to share knowledge with someone willing to listen and learn.

also youtube can teach you the basic terminology. but nothing beats the knowledge of someone knowledgeable.

I think you will find that will only encourage assmissle. he's not only limited to humans either.

The tail light wiring will have connector? You should not have had to cut them, but anyway, get a set of bullet connectors and a crimping tool (about $20 warehouse supercheap etc)
