I had similar issues with my (old) cheap low powered computer. A cheap high powered computer fixed the issue.

Get AdBlock Plus and block any parts of the site that aren't actually needed, eg footers etc. Otherwise, try the Mobile style.

Running the site through the chrome developer tools, when loading the General Bike Ravings Forum, it takes 44 requests when not logged in, and 48 when logged in. So an extra 4 requests.

However the reported page load time for me is pretty much identical, 2.3s.

The following will cause image and video controls to be disabled by default on every website you visit... but it will allow you to view Images/Video's on demand.

Disable autoload images. (Ask the internet "How-to disable loading of images in [insert browser of choice]").
Set Plugins to ask before loading other bits n pieces. (Ask the internet "How-to disable plugins in [insert browser of choice]").

That should speed things up considerably... you'll even be able to go into the threads that Husahunny said you shouldn't.
