I've got a spare one you could borrow, but by the sound of it I don't think it's the cdi. The tacho should have 3 wires coming out of it, it depends which one, cos some of the nc30's tacho's plugs are different but they all should have 3 wires. a brown/black positive, a yellow/green signal and a green earth wire check they're hooked up correctly. And have you got the speedo restrictor plug plugged in to the speedo?? If this is unplugged it cut's out over 5000 rpm.. you can bypass by wiring a resistor into this. let me know how you get on...

Yeah cheers for that i will have a look, im hoping the cdi is ok and the wiring like ypu say from the tacho could be the reason. Well down to the garage i go.

hey buddy, yes i have a spare, sorry i dont login and scan around here too often, but let us know should you need anything can overnight courier no problemos

also yeah i dont think its CDI, and you know the RVF/VFR tachos dont interchange at all? they run diff senders on the starter clutch if i am correct ben444? although i will add here i DID NOT know that teh NC30's came with diff Tacho plugs on some? the 5 that have been thru me have all been same.

Just had a look at the wiring diagrams of the two different NC30's... looks the plugs to the tacho's are the same... then I wonder what the hell I've got on mine??? I think it could be of a CBR400, which I'm pretty sure is the same as the RVF.. All the Honda 400's tacho's should be interchangeable, but with abit of chopping of wires and some insulation tape.
The pick up coils on the starter clutch send a signal to the spark unit to tell the unit the position of the crank, (vfr uses 2, rvf uses 1), then the spark unit sends a signal to the tacho... the signal of the RVF and VFR from the spark unit to the tacho should be the same... Tacho's are just big voltmeters..

    Oh shit I'm confusing myself..

Just rewired my RVF engine using a NC30 spark unit and wiring loom..

Will be riding the beast for the first time in a couple of years this Sunday.. Woo Hoo..

worng i think ben444 in my practical experience at least.

No matter which wiring configuration i tried the NC30 tacho would not work on my RVF and i did try over and over, check 400GB i vagually remember putting some findings up there and others had same issue. had to change starter clutch to get NC30 one to work from memory, there abouts.

    :P
