    Peak voltage meter?

Reading through my handy-dandy workshop manual for the VTR 250 it states that to test the CDI properly I need to have a Peak Voltage Meter... Any idea where the feck I can get one of 'em?

Usually you diagnose a faulty CDI by swapping in a known good one or eliminating everything else first. They're shits of things to test and the only way I would do it is with an oscilloscope and a few beers

We have a peak voltage meter at work, but I prefer to use a scope or a graphing meter. The boss doesn't like digital stuff, he likes his analogue meters. All work to find what the CDI charge coil puts out, and also the trigger, which is a much lower voltage. All you need to see is that it's getting a high voltage pulse in, and a low voltage to trigger, both AC...and then an output pulse to the coil.

If you have 12v feeding the CDI, (i,m picking it's your vtr250) and the pick up coil is delivering the right amount of resistance, then i'm quite sure your CDI is faulty,
As others say, track down a known good one of the same model, and swap them out. Early VTRs had average CDIs. MHO

(But katman will suggest a Katana one, cause we all know katanas are the greatest)

I have a peak voltage unit, but really, swapping out the CDI is the most reliable answer. Good luck.

    Eye-eye,

I fear that the Stator, CDI, and rectifier are all naffed. Gonna do some poking with my multimeter and see if I can figure it out

some dmms will do peak hold, but across limited range.
    Sillyoscopes the way to go.

Is this the '06 VTR you have on your details? Because that would be very strange

It is indeed, It's a stolen/recovered motorbike so who knows what the feck the thieves did to it.

Anyone got a spare CDI sitting around?
    Product Number: KFKG M55L 7221

Edit: Rectifier checks out, resistance between stator pin outs.... Looking like CDI

Edit #2: Actually any CDI from an 01-07 VTR 250 will do

can you drive a soldering iron? if so see this link it shows how to make a peak voltage meter adaptor http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/103...ltage-adapter/ You will need a good quality digital multimeter to plug on the other end of it is all.

And it's getting power to the cdi I suppose. Not too certain about the VTR but it's not uncommon to run a 9v signal to the cdi

Diagnosed failed pulse generator on xr200 the other day AA battery, kicked it over a few times to charge the CDI ,then bridged the 2 wires
disconnected from the pulse generator with the battery, nice spark at the plug!

Aye?! Mate, you're gonna have to give us a Youtube video or a guide with pictures on how to do that, sounds brilliant!

It's pretty simple, all it is doing is emulation the pulse generator. Bloody good idea, assuming your cdi is happy with it
