    RBI (Rural Broadband Initiative) speed?

Anyone using RBI here? Typically what sort of speed do you get from something like www.speedtest.net?

Everything I read suggests it aims to be around 5Mb/s down and 1Mb/s up. I have a Vodafone "sales" person telling a client of mine it is as fast as a "good" ADSL connection, but this just doesn't ring true to me.

5mb down is a good speed for adsl in the wops. We lived less than 30 mins from hams and 10 mins from Morrinsville and that would be more than double the best we ever saw BRAIN EXPLOSION!

For some reason I think that cell towers don't load up so well, so while early adopters and off peak users might see their claimed speeds, for the most part it would be lower.

My parents (who barely even get 2G reception) have got a LOS ADSL link across 20odd km to a thingo stuck close to a main interpipe, very cheap, no data caps, and good speeds (skype capable at peak times etc).

$10 says that the Cell tower that provides the link still runs a 10 or 100 mb backhaul - so it would only take a few people hammering the link to get throughput issues.

Also what is the Latency? probably up around the 30-40 ms region to the ISPs core, as opposed to most ADSL circuit which get about 5-10 ms to the ISP core.

Jesus Christ just how much porn are you rural rednecks trying to download, that should be plenty of data....

Seriously though that 3G broadband is a joke even in the city at normal times never mind peak usage. The 4G on my new phone is damn fast although I suspect because its under utilised at moment....
