$14,000 bicycle stolen - Do you feel sorry for him?

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald...Pleasant-Point

South Canterbury's Pleasant Point was not so pleasant for a competitive cyclist who had his $14,000 bike stolen there at the weekend.

Mitchell Podmore had stopped to get a coffee on Saturday afternoon.

He had leaned his Felt racing bike against his car, which was across the road from the NPD service station, and gone into the dairy.

"I came out and it was gone. I was inside for less than five minutes."

The red and black-framed bike was worth about $14,000. The frame was worth $10,000 and the racing wheels were an extra $4000.

Podmore is a road and track cyclist, and said because of the specialist features on the bike, it will take at least a month to get a new one.

"It's valuable time away from my bike. That is not only time I can't train, it will impact on my racing."

Just before Christmas Podmore had been crashed into by a car, and that had left him without a bike for almost two months.

Podmore has raced in the Tour of Southland, was part of the Canterbury Under 23 championship team, and is the brother of cyclist Olivia Podmore, who is part of the New Zealand team going to the junior world track championships.

Pleasant Point Constable Kris Howes said he had examined footage that may be of some interest but was calling for people to come forward who may have some information to add.

"It's a pretty high tech racing bike.. It would be an obvious bike if [the thief] tried to sell it on the black market."

Yes.... I'm guessing some will say he shouldn't have left such a bike out in public - ofcourse no one would say that to the Uni students or others who are unfortunate enough to have their (motor)bikes nicked from parking on the street in public spaces.

Maybe lacking a bit of sense, but nobody 'deserves' to be robbed.

Yes, i do feel sorry for him, regardless of what our opinion of pushbikes is this was his pride and joy and he would have worked hard to save the money for it. It is no different to one of us having our motorbike stolen. Unfortunately it is becoming too much of a regular occurrence these days and the penalties handed out by our justice system is just a joke.
Perhaps we should adopt the penalty system that Saudi Arabia uses. Would sure slow down re offending.
Rather hard to steal a bike with a hand or foot missing.

FWIW I do feel sorry for him and hope the scum that took it gets what's coming to them. Just really like clickbait titles.

Don't feel sorry for him as such - but his stuff shouldn't be nicked (or mine, for that matter).

Yeup... not sure why you're asking the question?

If you're implying it's because of worth, if someone's KTM/BMW/Ducati (which are often over $30k) got stolen, would you feel less sorry than someone with a jap bike worth less, if their's was stolen?

Yeah, had the same thought myself. Seems like a bit of a silly question really.

I feel sorry for the owner and hell to the low life scum who steals shit from others. But I don't understand media pointing this out. There was a $80,000+ 2013 Audi Q7 reported stolen in Wellington a few months back but I didn't see that on the headlines.

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

Because I post on Kiwibiker for my own entertainment because a lot of the users on this forum have strong opinions that are often different to each other's. This article seems like it could get some strong opinions from people.

I read it as he's on a strict schedule for training. If he's got to get another bike of the same type, he's going to need a month to get it which means he won't be training and the ramped up publicity might help get his bike back sooner.
