Doing 80 I didn't get a chance to avoid the one yesterday so used knees to grip the tank, loaded my bodyweight onto the pegs, kept throttle open and off the brakes. Forks bottomed out once in the hole and I've still no idea how me and the bike didn't go down.
Spot on. Happened within the space of about 10m or thereabouts. So about half a second travelling at that speed. Instant thought was better to hit the hole straight on and avoid the risk of clipping it. Keeping the throttle open and off the brakes didn't require time/effort; nor did a squeeze of the knees.

If noone reports it, it might not get fixed in time.

Just in Oz last week , some poor bikers on a Harley hit a hole in the road, came off and killed them both. Headlines in the paper.
I get annoyed that the councils and those responsible for organising repairs to roads and potholes etc are not onto getting repairs done quickly enough.
They should have crews that can turn on to any road damage as soon as it is reported, day and night with traffic management to assist.
It is said that it costs several million dollars per death on the road. Surely it is better to spend say $5000 - $10000 to fix a one off pothole.
Not without all the grief that it will put famililes to.
I must admit that I have occasionally contacted NZTA and local councils where roads have appeared unsafe to me.
And have got good response in all cases.
Looking at the poor state of some country roads in Australia it would seem things are not as good as here in NZ

To be fair I think the hole in Albany resulted from the previous day's downpour so not enough time for contractors to repair it. I would have avoided it if I'd been going straight on but I got caught out because of a mirror, head check, signal, manoeuvre in to the left filter lane ahead of a left turn on to the Coatesville-Riverhead highway. The photo shows the ding which will cost about $300 to be straightened versus $1,500 for a completely new rim. Btw, I followed up and reported it to AT and Popo.![]()
There's another massive pothole that has been filled twice now but keeps appearing... This one: https://goo.gl/maps/4rqxJ
If you're coming from albany village it's on the inside lane about halfway into the roundabout. I have hit it head on when it was a massive hole. It is a miracle my rim has no damage. If I was leaned over it'd be a different story again.
