I exercise regularly and try to keep in shape (round is a shape)... However time isn't kind and you do pick up a few knocks. I was having all kinds of issues with hips / knees so I was trucked off to a specialist who sent my to a specialist physio who then worked with an exercise therapist. I ended up with the stupidest exercise plan ever devised BUT I stuck with it and gradually the pain lessened and the functionality improved. Where it was a painful experience walking from the train (20min) its now pretty pain free.
The problem was that most gym exercises (particularly machines) are great at isolating muscles and making them work hard and increase size. Things like walking actually use lots of other little muscles as well as the big ones. You have to engage them all and the weird exercises we all about waking them up...
Find a good physio or exercise therapist and see what they can do...
I have shot knees (painful to walk) stuffed back (just painful) and Yes - I use the gym regularly - it helps.
The rest? Just old age catching up on us.
