anyone else been stung by " .exx " malware?

Wondered why my laptop was running slower than a month of wet Sundays last night, and noticed a pop up that wouldn't go away no matter how many times I closed it.
This morning my email wouldn't open either so called hubby to the rescue. I t turns out that the shitty malware virus had gotten past iolo and had encrypted all my files. Balu worked his magic, installed fresh operating system and so got rid of it but I lost all my files in the process.

Personally I think the arseholes who make these things for a living deserve to be put in a box containing scorpions and left for a month.

Has anyone been stung by this piece of shit and managed to save any of their stuff?

clone your disk when you've JUST done a clean install with all the programs you want and before you go online. save it somewhere like a portable hard disk.

then fuck yourself in the ass for using windows and migrate to a superior operating system that doesn't get viruses.

    That sucks arse.

Ransomware is a cunt of a thing, you can't get those files back unless you want to pay 250 bucks to some cunt who is holding them to ransom. Lets face it, it may well be worth 250 to pay a real person to fix it, but paying the scumbag is another matter imo.

Good antivirus is key, but regular backups are very hard to beat.

Can this get in through a good anti-virus software like McAffee or Norton 360 ??

    i'm sorry you what?

nortons is f**king terrible. drags system resources, clogs memory, moves files as it scans them meaning you have to defrag after every virus scan
    and McAffee isnt much better.

    imho eset NOD32 or GTFO

hell even windows defender is better than nortons.....

"exx" is just another variant of CryptoLocker.

It's come out in some various forms, essentially still doing the same thing, encrypting your files and deleting the key used unless you paid. Even featured on an episode of The Good Wife.

The malware itself is actually quite easy to get rid of (at least the variants I've dealt with), and I've fixed 3 computers since last year. However... there is no fix for encrypted files (other than decrypting).

The worst part, this malware can reach into any network locations the computer touches... only times I've ever erased a company share on servers... It may not encrypt all the files, but you have no idea which ones are until you check them all (when typically there is 100,000+ files). Erase the share, reach into the backups and restore a version prior to infection...

So how long were you using Norton for?
