The most recent one prior to the new one, Tangiwai I presume.
The venue itself was really good and the club had done a lot to make it that way. The hill climb was especially good, last year the hill climb was a bit of a joke IMO.
I miss the trees, I would have liked to try a hammock attached to them, the new venue is nothing but a paddock.
I do have a lot of sympathy for the organisers though, it can't be easy to find the perfect venue with perfectly co-operative land owners.

not every site has a hill, the club worked with what they had available. I will point out that participation in the events was at an all time low, at other sites it was easier to go and get your bike once you sawit was fun, but due to the hilly nature of the site people couldn't be arsed. the club can provide the venue, the games but it's up to the punters to join in and make them happen.


You mention a paddock, take a look at the first post here, paddocks are flat, this site had lots of character, and clearly the glass half empty attitude meant you couldn't find a tree or two to swing a hammock in , there are some there.
I'll be there. and i'll have some fun no matter what.

You think that paddocks are flat?
I suppose some are, many are not. I live in the Waikato, I know the huge variety paddocks come in.

If you read my post properly you would realise that I wasn't bitching about the club or saying it was their fault that the hill climb didn't match the previous one.
I was in fact saying pretty much what your first sentence says.
It is also important to understand that I never said that I regretted going to the last Cold Kiwi or that I didn't enjoy myself.
Not everyone that points out some negative factor is crying, bitching or putting anyone down.

I'm not too sure what you are referring to with the glass half empty thing, I was only pointing out that the glass had some liquid and some air in it - you know, realistic appraisal of the situation. I walked around the entire site and saw no where I'd try to set up a hammock (I didn't have one anyway, I was casting my mind forward to future rallies).
Regardless, I'm going to the Cold Kiwi this year no matter the venue or weather and I'll be warm and comfortable when I go to sleep.
I try to realistically view the situation and work with what is available, I'll look again at possible trees, but I'm prepared for what I expect:



I don't let too much stop me from doing what I want to do.
The situation is what it is and we just need to make the most of it.
I'll be at this Cold Kiwi just like I was at the last one and plan to be at the next one.
I've even got a few days off work and I'm currently sorting out my gear, charging torch batteries, dehydrating my Friday & Saturday dinner, etc.

Jesus do you need your own rigging crew for all that rope, that's a pretty serious setup. I'd find some trees, you wouldn't want some Harley ripping around at 4am to get hung up on those guy ropes.....

Saturday afternoon and evening might be pretty good looking at that rain prediction.

I went. Good fun. Beers were not as expensive as I thought they would be so I drank more of them to make up for it. Always need work to a budget.

Only negative was the main bonfire being so wet it wouldn't burn properly.

I took a heap of photos, but returned to work today and haven't sorted through them yet.
But I was there and it was pretty good for the most part, weather was a bitch but it did fine up on Saturday and they held all the usual events with the weather being amazingly co-operative.

My hammock, hammock stand & Redverz tent combo worked really well, I slept as a warm cosy kiwi at the Cold Kiwi.

Nice. I went for the double sleeping bag approach but was a little to hot on the Saturday night so converted to single. Woke up Sunday and realised why so hot. I was wearing my wet weathers still.

When I got there on Friday (around midday) it was pretty wet and slippery, difficult to get forward momentum going:



Got to there, said "Fuck it!" and set up my tent.

Riding from Morrinsville to Horopito and from Horopito to Morrinsville the ST1300 was a great machine, but around the rally site this guy had the right sort of bike:



I think that next year I'll take the DR650, just in case.
I managed to not drop the ST but it was damn close at times.
With the DR I'm not so worried, I've already dropped it plenty of times.
