Rear tyre puncture help

Got out to the bike tonight only to find a very flat rear tyre.

Wobbled a couple of hundred metres down the road to the local servo and found this sticking out of it:



Thought I might inflate the tyre and see if it would hold some air long enough to get me home, but couldn't get the nozzle from the air hose onto the valve well enough to inflate it at all .

Been carrying a "Cargol" puncture repair kit for a couple of years now with three air cannisters. Decided to remove the staple and screw in one of the plastic plugs that comes in the kit (in case the staple leaked again):



Wasn't as easy as advertised but eventually I got the plug in and managed to get the tyre up to around 25psi using the cannisters and head off down the road aways. Stopped and checked the pressure, which stayed constant, so limped home.

Checked the tyre once there and it was still holding air, see below (ignore the white stone stuck in the tread):



So wondering if this means I've ruined my back tyre as the plug's made the hole a lot bigger? Either way I'll have to get it looked at tomorrow, no spare vehicle.

Take it to a Bike shop for a proper repair and it will be fine.

what nzspokes said, it needs a proper internal mushroom repair. the slightly larger hole shouldn't be a problem the hole can be up to 5mm across and still be repaired as long as the inside of the tyre is ok. when your at the shop buy some tyre repair strings see http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/onli...ecommendations for the pretty picture. the repair kit you have with the hard plastic repairs can work they way out, simple physics the tyre flexes and the hard plastic repair doesn't and it works out of the tyre.

The proper repair is quite large so it actually wouldn't plug a small hole, and they'd likely make the hole a little bigger (except perhaps you have already).

The footprint of it inside the tyre is quite large and they also won't repair punctures near the edge of the tyre (this looks like it's closer to the centre of the tyre).

Then it's down to the actual tyre, eg, Michelin Pilot Roads aren't 100% reliable with repairs...

Take it to a proper tyre repair shop, get them to pull out what you've put in and replace it with a proper Mushroom plug, then no problems, otherwise you will of course be somewhere and it'll let go.
