    82 XL250R Rebuild precaustions

    Hi all,

So iv managed to hunt down an un-cracked head along with some good rockers and cam (From a CB250RS) for my 82 XL250RC and was wanting to know if anyone had any suggestions on how to minimize the heads from cracking/wearing out the cams .etc as its not a cheap exercise hunting down new heads each time.

    Cheers in advance

    Adam

Park it up and don't use it...that will certainly stop the rockers wearing but may not stop the head cracking.

Seriously, that is the only way. i've seen them owned by guys fanatical about the best oil changed every five minutes, and they still wear out. Refaced rockers and a cam with eutectic buildup does help a bit, but it will still wear. Probably a complete revamp of the top end oiling system would do it, but the head will still crack...Actually I'm surprised you found a CB250RS head in good nick. Written off in an accident at low K's ?

Set the valve clearances often, and accurately. Doesn't hurt to be a thou wider in the clearance, and allows less chance of oil starvation to the followers and cam/bearings.MHO
