    Good catch

Offender will probably get a slap on the wrist , but good work to the officer managing to apprehend him on foot in all the get up that he would have been wearing.

The attempted strangling of a police officer on motorcycle patrol in South Auckland has raised concerns about under-equipped staff working alone.

The incident happened around 3pm on Tuesday, after the officer chased the fleeing driver in an allegedly stolen vehicle, which had failed to stop in Manukau.

The vehicle was abandoned in Otara, and the man fled on foot.

He was then chased by the officer and a struggle followed, during which it was alleged the man tried to strangle the officer.

After a brief further foot chase, the officer was able to apprehend and restrain the man until help arrived.

In Cahoots with the NZPA's Mr whatshisface.
Police should always be in pairs these days, as for arming with anything other than a PR 24 or good old fashioned log of wood, Individual Constable's decision to up skill to whatever weapon they think appropriate, is what I'd be comfortable with.

Yup, I'm happy with that concept as well.
Several friends have stated that when it is necessary for plod to be armed, then they will do the same.
Obviously it isn't safe out there for cops, so blatantly it is not safe forcitizens' either.

These friends are quite law-abiding people, not your run-of-the-mill gangsters.

It's NOT Ok for everyone else to be armed .. it's ikllegal unless you are hunting or at a gun club, or the weapons are stored.

And the cops are fucking useless with guns .. killed an innocent bystander on the Dorkland motorway - missed a rottie when they were firing automatic weapons ...

When I was in Hawke's Bay a cop went to a house in Bay view investigating a complaint about a dangerous dog .. the dog ran at him up the driveway, the cop pulled his pistol, fired and missed the dog at a range of seven feet (I measured it). The bullet bounced off the driveway, went through the window of the house and into a wall above a couch where a baby was sleeping ..

many incidents - I would not feel safe with armed police around. I don't trust them

And if the police get arms then it will start an arms race with the crims - and the crims will win that race because there are no rules holding them back at all ..

Very true! The scarier part is what ISN'T known by the public or media.
The dangerous situations perpetrated by the blue gang whilst handling, training, re-training is diabolical.

You are right re the plod being useless with guns.
But in their defense, unless they are practicing very regularly with live ammo in realistic scenarios, when it comes time to actually use a firearm in a real situation where you get maybe a second or two to decide what is the right thing to do, never mind what the media or arm chair experts might say if you get it wrong, it isn't as easy as it looks on TV cop shows.

To be fair, it's easier for US-based cops because they don't give a fuck about "innocent" bystanders. The higher the ratio of rounds fired to deaths, the bigger next the budget for next year's ammo.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?

the average blow in nz who wants to hold a pistol license will fire more rounds in a weekend than the cops do in a year of 'training'
